Looks like Bois du Ordures to me (garbage wood)...send it this way for disposal.

OK, that is a fruit tree, and from its appearance it resembles one of these species, Almond, Apricot, Plum, possibly even Peach. My money is on Apricot, at this moment, if you slice it up, it may show up some other characteristics that I can recognize...!
Very pretty colours in there and some very "spunky" spalting...!:biggrin:
PS: I didn't see the leaf until you mention it, I should add Apple tree to the list...!

You could add crabapple and the native American plum to the potential list .

I would lean on Apricot also, but you would be able to tell when you cut into it, with its distinct smell. Oh wait, you may not know what the smell is, so i'll tell you what, send all of it to Wichita Falls, and i will smell of it!

Don't quote me on this, but I would lean more towards Apple... I googled pictures of the bark and leaves and they come closest.

Apple would not tend to have that much color. I would go with plum which I cut down last month.

Thanks - Apple/Crab apple would make sense. I don't see many plum or apricot trees in this area so that would be shocking to me. I ran across it driving through a part of town i'm not often in. I saw it and had some extra time so knocked on the door and asked if i could take some of it out of the way. That is not a thorn in the picture. I took one of the smaller pieces and turned off the bark and the wood was very wet - it had rained here a couple days before. with the water it's pretty heavy, but seems like it would have some weight otherwise. I've been reading up a little bit on drying, and was thinking i might try to split it up with a chisel/hammer before letting it dry..maybe melt some candle wax on the ends? I don't have much in the way of tools to cut it in the size that it's in.
