Egad Ed---that joke is even older than I am.....first time I heard it I was too young to laugh so I just rolled over and s***. And before jumping to conclusions the word might be spit.
If you are seriously asking - there is no difference in the meaning in a legal sense. I think that today the term chosen depends on the offence and which sounds better and flows better.
