My son had a small maple tree cut down and brought me the crotch section. It sat in my carport for about 8 months before I got around to doing anything with it. I did get a couple nice spalted bowls from it though.

Finish is just beeswax and mineral oil. Used it as a sanding wax so the sandpaper was lubricated and no dust. Once the sanding was done I just buffed it.

The spalting in the wood was likely the lucky result of letting it sit on the carport floor for 8 months before I did anything with it.
 
Awesome bowls, Rick! I think you should show the type of wood this is in the center of the circle.

I'm thinking that's the 1st question people will ask after they turn it over.

I have a lot of spalted maple waiting for me! From my Brother's Yard in 2012.

What I have turned looks much like yours - Nice spalting; nice ambrosia in places. Makes for great projects. Of the bowls I have done... about 1 in 5 are really nice; the others the spalting just looks like a mess :eek:.
