Jet 1014 Belt Replacement ALREADY!

I bought my son a new Jet 1014 last Christmas. He's probably turned 25 pens and drilled 100 blanks on the lathe since Christmas. The belt broke on him today.

Belts shouldn't shred that fast. I highly doubt Jet warranties a belt, but it's worth asking the forum.

Should I be calling Jet up to explain this situation/issue or is it just and exercise in futility?

I would talk to Jet tech support. The belt should not wear out that fast unless something is wrong. Pulleys out of alignment? Something rubbing on the belt? Belt tension way too tight / loose? Something else?

Maybe it was a defective belt, but maybe it was something else. If you can't figure it out for sure then just putting a new belt on might end up with the same problem again in a couple of months.

Jet tech support may be able to help you troubleshoot the issue.

Do you have a picture of the belt (with a closeup of where it broke)?

Mark; Check and make sure the pulleys are aligned. Place a straight edge on the flat surface of one pulley and see where it falls on the second pulley. Then reverse the ruler and use the flat surface of the second pulley to the first pulley. It may be possible to loosen a set screw to align the pulleys. I believe these are standard belts. check in a fair sized city yellow pages under "Industrial Supplies" or "Bearings and Belts".
 
They may replace it as a gesture of good will, but I suspect if it doesn't shred in the first month, it's a good belt. Many good suggestions given already that cause early failure.

Sounds like you may have a pulley out of alignment..... but if Jet doesn't replace the belt, they'll sell you one for about $20 plus shipping.... I keep a stock of 2 or 3 belts for my 1014 on hand... I buy them from The Belt Store in Lafayette, LA.... I get about 3 belts for the price of one from Jet and they're shipped same day or next day depending on how late you contact the store... I've had very good luck working with the Techies at Jet... they seem pretty knowledgeable.

BTW I don't work for or have any affiliation with the store, but I've used them a number of years... for both the 1014 and 1442.

I grabbed 2 belts for $36 shipped off of ebay. The seller is in Wisconsin, so if he ships tomorrow, I should have the belts Friday or Saturday. I'll call Jet from work tomorrow and then maybe a follow-up call to them when I get home from work. This looks like a pain in the behind to change out a simple belt.

I've got a Rockler Excelsior lathe that needs a new belt on it, too. I guess I'll be changing that one out first before I play around with the new Jet. I'm guessing the concept is the same on both lathes.
