The detail gouge Carl is using is a small (1/4" ?) spindle gouge with a swept back grind on the wings. It allows you to get into small, tight places.
 
Also, a few more tool questions if you dont mind... I'm looking at this video.

at the 3:57 mark he changes the way he has the wood mounted only on the headstock, he is using a different chuck than I have.. I have one that has 4 "claws" (for lack of better word) I tried mounting only to that yesterday and the pieces kept flying out everytime I touched tools to them... The one he is using makes a circle.. does that make a big difference when only mounting to the headstock? I just ordered one:

That should fit my lathe, do you think I will notice a difference?

Also what is the actual tool that he is using to hollow out the cup? I think he says it, but I cant catch what he is saying... Could someone link me a good quality one I can order? Thank you all so much, a lot of the tools LOOK alike but thay are a little different....

Ahh Mike Waldt. Knows his *Blee* it when it comes to wood turning.
Don't get hung up on the tools he uses. and yes a Scroll Chuck is a very good and practical investment.
 
Waldt is using spigot chuck jaws. They are very good for supporting long cantilever pieces without additional support. Spigot jaws are available for most chuck bodies (but perhaps not for the smallest body sizes).

It is difficult to turn long cantilever pieces with a small dovetail. A small catch will lever the wood out of the chuck.


He is using a spindle gouge. I would tend to use a small bowl gouge.

Look on Google for a lathe hollowing tool, Look on Google for a Nova, Tekna, One way or Talon chuck. PSI, CSUSA...all the wood turning retailers carry both items...pick the price that suits your budget.
