I cut this the other day. After debarking, it's one if the ugliest blobs of burl I've ever seen. I've identified it as sweet birch....the first I've found of this kind. At over 100lbs, lots of wood to turn.....now I just need to figure out what to do with it all:)

Steve; There no ugly burls, only ones you have not made something out of yet. Turn it and see what it looks like. If it realy has no pop when turned, you may have to stain or dye it to bring out the grain. Play with the cutoffs before moving on to your main turnings. Jim S

Nice burl, not sure what to do with it, send some up river to danville.....good catch

Going to need to get you a bigger chain saw bar. Think nice, even cuts(equals less waste wood).

With the smoothness of it, I sure would like to see 'inside'....wondering if there is going to be any 'eyes'? What are the dimensions too?

I just had lunch in the Danville Fire Hall/Club last weekend with a friend. I'll be sure to bring some burl next time:)

Scott,

It's pretty much round, averaging 34". I agree a new bar would be nice......but that's up to momma:)

I do not think there are many eyes....one small section has the little pimples that are synonymous with eyes. I took a slice off and have some dried. It's a burl better suited for bowls so I may just chop it up, seal it, and let it rest.

Think 'forgiveness' when purchasing that new bar/chain:rolleyes:
I find it very difficult to ask the "One-that-must-be-obeyed" to 'allow' me to purchase fun things.....

Might be a 'challenge' to get cool looking blanks, but I'm sure you have plenty of time to give it some 'studying'. Be interested in seeing what you slice out of it though....few odd shaped bowl equals awesome!

Scott (neighbors are awake...WOOHOO noise time!) B

You wait for the neighbors to wake up?!?! As my grandfather used to say, "It's after 5. If they're not awake, they need to be!"

That is a funky looking burl. Hopefully there's some hidden inner beauty that will justify a new bar/chain.

That's one confused piece of burl with grain not knowing what direction to go. I think it would be happier as a bowl to capture the grain better. I bet it will look awesome.

That would be great, which fire hall were you at..
