I have an older Supernova chuck. It is a good chuck but I hate the key. It has a T handle but not the one with the Allen wrench on the end. It has a big head at the end. It swivels and has sprockets. I have to fight it to get the sprockets to seat properly every time.

I want to get a new chuck with a Allen wrench type key. Any recommendations???

Happy 2014' everyone!

The best chuck for the money, in my opinion, is CSUSA's Apprentice Chuck. It's a good price and comes with four sets of jaws. Mine seems to jump on the lathe far more often than my Nova.

Of course, the OP already has an older supernova, so presumably already has the jaws that he prefers. Therefore, the base supernova2 might be the smart buy.

"Since you already have a Supernova I would just get the reconditioned SN2
for $110"

I recently bought two of these (SN2, reconditioned), already having the basic Nova chuck. Now I have a dedicated chuck for the jaw sets I use, without too much damage to the ol' credit card!:smile:

I'll argue with anyone that the best chuck out there when cost is a factor is the Grizzly. I will also ask anyone to find a quality issue with this chuck. You hear little about it because they do zero advertising, but for $110, you can't beat it.....and Grizzly has customer service right there with CSUSA.

Sorry fellow turners... You still have to go a loooong way before you can match the price (I just purchased a brand new SN w/50mm jaw set, etc. for $109...) and available jaw set anywhere on the market.... Technatool must have most jaws available anywhere... I can't seem to beat the price or their quality anywhere w/their available jaw sets... If you can, let me know, I 'might' switch... ;>)

Maybe the question I should be asking is:
Does anyone else have the problem I have with the sprockets at the end of the key for my Supernova being hard to seat properly?

I get them seated but it is not quick and easy.

Not sure what you mean be spockets. Can you post a picture?

I have a SN2 and it has a ball allen head on the end of the wrench. I assume this is not what you are talking about.

"Ah feel your pain." My Oneway talon chuck has the same setup but I like it better than my Oneway scroll chuck that has the 2 bars. Guess I like to use 1 hand rather than 2. Oh yeah, I just bought a new Vicmarc 100 chuck which uses the allen wrench.

Let the argument begin. My first one was great. The second one I ordered 2 years latter was a POS. The bolts that mount the jaws were bottomed out and the jaws rattled. Could not tighten them. Then I tried the key in it and I could barely get it to open. I sent it back and they sent me a new one. This one was smooth enough, and the jaw bolts were okay, but two of the dovetail jaws were taller than the other two. I took it to work and machined them flat. I'll not be buying any more chucks from them.

Why not get a new key from Nova. I have two Nova chucks and the key on one works well and the other does not. I wrote them and explained and they sent me a new key.
