So I was informed that I'll be spending a couple weeks in Honolulu, HI over the holidays for work and I was wondering if anyone on the forum is in this area or knows someone from this area that has good deals on some figured Koa wood that I can bring back?

Thanks in advance

Not sure, but you might try woodpenpro.com. He is a pen kit retailer and he has wood blanks as well. If he hasn't got any I'm sure he could point you to someone that does stock Koa.

Makes awesome pens, has a metal lathe, gets to spend a couple weeks in HI, will probably come home with the craziest figured Koa man has ever seen. I tell ya, some guys just have all the luck!

I would definitely check out Jimmy Finley's shop since it's right near where you will be. You might also send a message to some of the folks who sell Hawaiian wood on ebay to see if any of them have a shop/mill that you can visit. If you can make it to the Big Island, I would also suggest a visit to the Esquibel Wood Shop in Keeau. It's run by Joel Lawson who sells on ebay as joelinhawaii2 and has a web site at joelinhawaii.com. I've bought quite a bit of wood from Joel & he has excellent stuff & great service.

Okay, okay Derek, I see where this is going, ha ha ha! I'm thinking I need to get back into some turning and do something with those lathes  It's not all fun in Hawaii, most of the time it will be work, work, work!

All I'm saying is there are worse places than Hawaii to be working in, for instance, South Dakota! It's 7 degrees below zero here right now! Enjoy your trip and hopefully you come home with some amazing timber.

I have also bought many things from him. Great guy, great service. Definitely stop in and see him. Warning though........ no matter how well your shop is equipped and set up, you will hate your shop after you see his. Just saying....

I would probably say working in Hawaii is probably better than vacationing in SD

You may want to visit http://www.alohawoods.com/ if you make it to the big Island. My Dad this past year had to work in Hawaii for 4-5 months, I asked if they would bring me back some Curly Koa and other assorted Hawaiian woods. The went here and raved about the service they received. Especially considering they didn't have a clue as to what to buy and I have only given them species names. I was VERY happy with what they brought me back.

Can't help ya with the Koa search, sorry Tim. So I take it you'll be away from the family for Christmas? If so I'm sorry to hear that.

Yup, I'll miss Jasmine's 2nd Birthday, Christmas, New Years, and after I come back in January I'm headed right back out. This looks like another busy year! Got to say I'm tired of this place and ready to move on when my time is up.

Skype will help! Be sure to hug your family and loved ones when you can:biggrin:

I would suggest contacting Andy Cole (andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org). He is one of the officers for the Honolulu Woodturners Group. I was part of the group while I lived there. It is full of great folks.

Jim

You may want to check with Aaron Lau of Lau Lau Woodworks.

He makes and sells some tremendous Hiawian pens from Koa, etc.

Great guy and if anyone knows about the local timber it's Aaron.

When I'm out of town I always get the phone book and check out the yellow pages. My wife and I vacationed in Maui and I found a guy who turned trophies out of wood so I gave him a call. I told him what I did and what I was looking for and he said he'd been waiting for someone like me to show up. He had several 5gal buckets full of scraps perfect for pens. They were too small for him to use but he knew they were big enough to be used for something and the figure was great. I picked up koa, mango, monkey pod and some pheasant wood. He didn't want to sell them so I talked him into taking 20 bucks for lunch. I also stumbled across nice wood on a few other trips as well. The biggest problem is that on weekends most are closed. Good luck and have a fun and safe trip.
