I have seen thorn like protrusions similar to that in some Eucalyptus or Red Gum I had after the thick bark had fallen off ????

Any color to the heart how about a shot of the grain???

Hi Bruce, sorry that I forgot to give more info.
This piece is 6inches long and about 1 1/2 inches diameter. There was more of it there and up to about 8in dia. I chose this piece because it had the most spectacular protrusions in a spiral pattern. The other pieces have the some protrusions but not as many.

The outer wood is creamy white and the centre is a mustardy colour.

:redface::redface::redface:. I do have an idea what it is but am not sure. No bark, sorry.

Saw something similar in our neighborhood where they've planted some new trees in the median. Searching the web, saw this site, and several look similar: Silk Floss Tree, Hercules Club, Kapok, and Pochote.

The is a perfect example of Fog wood. Fog (found on ground) wood is frequently mistaken for Goat (got on a trade) as their properties may be similar but the method of procurement is dramatically different.

In my expert opinion the is curly, thorny variety of Fog wood. In accordance with the international laws of the "my wife, my firewood, my business", THAT'S my story and I'M sticking to it.

Ya might be on ta sumthin PenMan1, further research indicates that it most definitely is
"FOGUS CURLII, variety Pricklyite"
