Dropped my Nikon Coolpix L810 off the tripod on the tile floor... lens first...OUCH! Now it wont turn on and lens is stuck half way. Sad part is my wife got the deal of the year on this for me last Christmas. It wasn't that expensive but will be much more to replace it. Is it repairable and still expect it to work or should I go buy another?

I feel your pain brother I really do.

I once jumped into the water with my rig and the worst things you can ever hear when doing underwater photography is the dreaded GLUG GLUG GLUG of a water leak. After about $1,500 in shipping, repairs, testing and the like I ended up buying a new setup. Fortunately the 'accident' was on the last day of the week long wild dolphin encounter.

KEH.com does repairs, they are very good to. So does B&H I think.

Is there the possibility of homeowner's insurance accidental event coverage.?If so, depending on the deductible you might recoup some of the loss.

Glenn,
I dropped a Canon PowerShot once and did some similar damage. I called canon and asked about repairs. Sent it to them and had it repaired at no charge. Can't say you will have the same experience but a call to the Nikon service dept can't hurt. Good luck, my friend.
Do a good turn daily!
Don

Being a photographer, myself, I feel your pain. Call Nikon. If that does not work, call CameraTechs in Seattle, for a second opinion. You can find them at cameratechs.com. I've been patronizing them for 20+ years, for repairs and purchases of used equipment. They are very reputable.

You could also check out Costco, considering that Christmas stuff is out, as well as ebay. I've had success with Cameta Auctions.

I would caution against buying from any seller who is not a dealer in new & used equipment. If you buy a used product, it should be refurbished to the manufacturer's specs. You don't want to get a defective product and loose more money!

I wish you success and hope that you will keep us informed!

Sincerely,
Maria

Try Nikon, several years ago I bought, what was then a fairly high end Sony for my wife. The second day we were in Rome she droped it on to the stone floor at the Coliseum. The lens had a dent and would not retract back into the camera. I sent it to Sony with all the info of when it was purchased etc. and I will be darned they covered it under warranty. You never know.

Try a warranty claim, I have done it a couple of times with apple, say something like the lens was not working properly and as you were trying to get it to work it slipped out of your hands,, that way if the was no fault it wouldn't have happened:rolleyes:
Might work
Good luck
Cheers Ben

How about if we don't suggest lying to get warranty work done...

Depending on the cost of the camera and lens and the deductible on your homeowners, you might get it replaced through your insurance. I almost had a similar accident once with a big long telephoto and the tripod set up with the third leg to the rear. It overbalanced and tipped forward but I caught it before it hit the floor. I was using a highboy telescoping tripod and had the legs shortened and the head cranked WAY up. Not the smartest configuration with a heavy long telephoto lens. Small footprint and top-heavy camera.
