Anyone out there know anything about rules around how an unused in-ground oil tank should be handled for a house being put up for sale? We are getting ready to put my mother-in-law's house up for sale. I think the house was built in the 40's, and was converted to gas heat in the late 60's or 70's. The oil tank was left in the ground after the conversion. We've received some conflicting advice on weather or not that tank needs to removed. We've even heard that we might need to get the EPA involved, if the tank still has oil in it because of a possible leak. Were just not sure where to get started on this one. I'd love to hear from anyone with experience dealing with this situation. Thanks.

I would suspect you are dealing with state and local laws----contact a local real estate agent who sells houses in the same neighborhood. He or she will have experience and know who to direct you to.
