I have a construction project that we are currently having cleared - 35 acres.

lucky me - on 6 acres near the creek at the back of the property - there's a smorgasbord of trees that any turner should love to have.

I've taken a large white ash (counted rings at 110 years old), some small holly, and today a large cedar elm and a hophornbeam. I've still got several elms, sweet gum, black tupelo and hickory that I can cut during this phase of the project.

I know - pics or it didn't happen...it's dark and I'm bushed - I 'll shoot a pic of all the logs in the back of my poor truck tomorrow.

nope, none that I've seen, or that my "whiz-bang tree ID" friend has seen either.

however, we did find 2 small Texas persimmon.

And now for your trivia moment of the day (that I learned from the tree ID guy) - Texas Ebony is not a true ebony, but persimmon is!

knowing that, the 3 persimmon trees growing behind my garage may have a limited lifespan

I'm assuming you're referring to hophornbeam as "ironwood" - it is surprisingly light in color and very close grained.

we cut it to use as tool handles. it is VERY dense.

Thats awesome. Need some help disposing of that bounty? Would love to try and spalt some elm, hickory & sweetgum.
we might could work a deal, I can supply some wood if you give me some spalted pieces after the process is done.

have you checked into Dr. Robinson's method of spalting?

I just throw my wood out into the woods or in my FIL's firewood rack about a year or so then remember it and reclaim it all nice and streaked with blackness :)
