Last night I got a call from Curtis asking me if I had anymore Paul Huffman vises left as at SWAT he had talked to Alan Lancer and his wife Mary about them and they were coming through Oklahoma today and might stop by.
This morning Mary called me and asked if they could stop by.
Mary makes perfume pens and wanted to see a vise and how they worked. Alan and Mary arrived around 1:30 and just left. Alan as most know here is the maker of the Alan Lancer turning tools and gives demos all over the world.
He just was taken with all the different blanks and we went to the shop and I quickly milled , turned one of the feather blanks and polished it. I think we might have taken one of the worlds top turners and made a pen turner out of him. He left with a vise, blanks, bushings and kits. Him and Mary are just the salt of the earth type folks and we enjoyed them so much. Also he and I had more in common as he has a '69 Chevelle and loved my '65.
He asked me to keep this to myself as he didn't want others knowing he crossed over to the "DARK SIDE"........penturning. You all know I can't keep a secret :rolleyes:

Alan Lacer is one of the nicest professional turners I ever met. No attitude, just a huge desire to share his expertise with anybody willing to listen.

That's pretty cool to have him show up at your shop and to get him hooked on pens!

Curtis can't take all the credit for this. He, Don Ward and I all gave high marks to Paul's vice in the Penturning SIG at SWAT on Friday night.

then Mary snagged me the next day and asked for more information because she couldn't find it on your site.

I didn't get to talk with Alan much, but Mary was very nice!

Curtis did say there were a number of you that sang the praise of the PH Designs Vise, for this we thank you. Meeting both Mary and Alan was great and Skippy yes I did clean up and pressed my "T" shirt.

We do indeed. I helped make some room in the shop when I left yesterday evening! ;)
Sounds like a fun day, Roy!

You sure did make some more room and I spent all morning cleaning the shop, you can walk through it now with out having to trip three times for every two steps you take:biggrin: Hope you enjoy your new metal lathe, at least it will have an experienced person using it now.

That's really cool Roy. I got to meet Alan at our local turners meeting several months back. Super nice guy as long as you don't try and take his mini spin tops from his bottle!

Alan Lancer is one of the founding members of the Central Oklahoma Woodturners Association in Oklahoma City. He will be back in OKC in November for a club demonstration and he has two one day workshops scheduled.

so, will we be seeing you at SWAT next year?

I just might be there next year if a table is made available

Nice score and story Roy. Remind me not to tell you any secrets.

Pssst....once Bruce told me.....

Yes Alan is from right here in central Oklahoma, Norman Oklahoma and Mary did mention him being back here in November.

I have a little bottle of his spinning tops he gave me after SWAT a few years ago. My booth was right next to theirs and I spent a lot of time talking with Mary while Alan was doing rotations. We hit it off well and I now consider them very good, personal friends.

Mary came to my booth Sunday morning and asked how to find the vises on Roy's site. I figured I could do better than that so I called Roy and helped set it up for them to drop by for a visit and pick up a vise. She just called me an hour or so ago to thank me and said they had a great visit with Roy. They did say Roy was a real "character"!

Funny thing is, I have spoken with Roy hundreds of times on the phone and have never had the opportunity to meet him in person. Maybe this next year's SWAT? Come on, Roy, it is only $150 for a table!

Here is a pic of the incredible mini-tops that Alan Lacer makes for those interested. The pen behind the bottle was put there to show the size and it is a Long Click.

I should have started saving up last year:rolleyes:, lets see 12 months to go if we put aside $12.50 a month.

Looks like it just might be in our budget:wink:

I've never been to any other turning symposium, but I've been told by many that SWAT is the second best in the county - behind the AAW symposium.

I would love to see more penturning vendors and demos at SWAT
