Anyone in the Houston area had their foundation repaired? I have a bad feeling that I'll have to have mine done soon. Any recommendations or who to avoid would be greatly appreciated.

For about $30, you can become a Angie's list member---that might be money well spent in this situation.

FWIW,

Living in Houston, it's almost a foregone conclusion you will have foundation trouble... my son's house in Bastrop just had 36 piers installed to a depth of 55 feet under one corner of his house... When I was living in Huffman, we were leasing a house on a lease to purchase contract and I noted that the bedroom doors didn't swing level and the tile in the dining room cracked about a month after I installed it... turned out we had a 4" difference between the kitchen area at one end of the house and the master bedroom at the other end with a crack running across the slab about midway between the ends of the house... we called Auscham (not sure if spelling is correct) they're PR rep on TV is Nolan Ryan... you've likely seen some of his commercials.... they gave us a quote of $24,000 to tunnel under the house and level it. I thanked them and bought another house in Atascocita. But they do have a good reputation.

Living in Shawnee Ok. almost every home past 1 year needs foundation work as the ground is a mix of sand and clay. During most summers the ground dries out so much that the yard will have cracks 10 feet long 2 inches wide. We researched when we had our foundation work done and picked Olshan as they are national and they guarantee you'll not have any foundation work needed after they finish. They came to my house said I needed 13 piers @ $500 per and if we ever need more they would at no charge. That was 4 years ago, last summer I saw cracks in the brick and called them. They installed 4 more piers and rejacked two of them at no charge. I bet you have Oshan in Houston as Nolan Ryan is their spokesperson.

probably Olshan you are referring to.

Monty - check your homeowner's insurance, you may have foundation coverage. I know when I was offered it - I jumped on it. It was very reasonable.

I have Olshan coming out Wednesday to look at the foundation.
I don't think I have insurance for it, but I'll check.

I used Olshan for my old house. It needed several piers when I had the initial work done and then had them add a few more.

If you get everything, you'll probably need some in the middle,of the rooms to support the interior spaces of the floor. The piers only have a support reach of a few feet to either side.

They'll also suggest piers around doors to support the door frames.

If you have it done, be ready for a mess. There's nothing like having a jack hammer rip open your slab for a guy to get in the hole to dig about 4-6 feet down.

Call me if you want to know more.
