Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and turning. Thanks for having me. I am looking for a used lathe to get started on. I live in Southern Illinois and I am a truck driver which comes in handy to go pick up things bought away from home. So send me a picture of what you've got and let's talk. Thanks Doug

try Craigslist in your area, or on your route.

also - look for a local woodturning club in your area. many times you'll find experienced turners moving up that are selling old lathes.

One economical way to get started is to purchase the Harbor Freight lathe, which normally sells for about $129. It has variable speed and is just perfect for making pens. Quite a few of us have purchased this lathe and unless you want to advance to bowl making or turning larger items, it will serve you well. Those who later upgrade generally keep their HF lathe to use as a dedicated buffer. Plus, HF often has 20% off coupons, which could save you some good money. There are dozens and dozens of things to spend your money on when getting started in this hobby. This is one good way of saving some while getting started.

I have a used Jet Mini 1014, see JET 1014 Mini Lathe | Pen Making | Craft Supplies USA
for a picture and specs. I have converted it to variable speed, installed new bearings, added a commercial grade on off switch, etc. Send me a PM if interested.
