About a week or so ago, I and someone else made posts about our computers running slow and ask what to do to speed them up. It was suggested by several that we download ccleaner and run the defrag program. In did, and to my surprise it indicated my HD was about 41% fragmented while the defrag that came with Win 7 (?) said it was only about 3% fragmented. So, I ran the ccleaner defrag program and it did seem to speed up my computer...for a few days. I ran the defrag program from ccleaner again last night and surprise, it showed the HD at 43% fragmented. Ran the program to defrag and checked it again this morning and the HD again shows 43% fragmented.
What gives??? How many times do I need to run the defrag?

Just use the defrag command at the command prompt. While the third-party software may be legitimate, it does not mean it is effective.

As was also suggested, you may want to have the PC's hard drive serviced by a professional. They often use different software, some of which is not available to the general computing population.

BTW, my 1,000th post -- woo hoo!!:bananen_smilies047:

See how many programs are being opened when you start your computer. the ones you don't use, move them out of your start up files. Do you have a lot of icons on your desk top? they to will slow down your computer. Is it slow all the time or mainly when you are in the internet?

I prefer a PerfectDisk ( Defrag Software - PerfectDisk 12.5 Home ) It does very well on PCs as well as servers, and understands the differences between HD, SSD and hybrid drives. You can try it free for 30 days.

I use it at home on a Windows Home Server and all Windows clients - they make a special package deal for that setup. Plus I use it at work and for a couple clients. It a set and forget type thing, it keeps working in the background.

Windows does seem to love fragmenting files. I've used MyDefrag for years. Yeah, it may not be the best option, nor the fastest, but the price is right. I'll use the "System Disk Daily" for my single drive machines, and the "Data disk daily" on the drives for machines that have more than one hard drive. I don't defrag my thumb drives, as it doesn't seem to help much (no moving parts). I will defrag external hard drives occasionally when they start to get pokey.

Now only if I could get ahold of an "inner middle/inner edge/outer edge" defrag program, then you could really do some tweaking.

You are running a normal, spinning hard disk (not Solid State Drive), right?

I'll double check what is running, but I removed several last week. It's slowers when loading programs like Office and Fire Fox.

I'll give this a try if I can't get results with what I have loaded.

I assume a normal spinning HD because I can hear it start and stop and the computer is about 5yo.

Did you download and run malwarebytes?
I'll download and run that later tonight or tomorrow morning.

There is a place in CCleaner where you can go see what loads on start up. There is also a "disable" button. I disabled a bunch of stuff on an old laptop, and it made things much more livable. I also gave it a a good run of MyDefrag, and things were much better.

Mannie: Mary and I are headed back in your direction. Son and wife and our grand children live in Friendswood. Our purpose is to move close to them. Keep your eyes open for a good home to buy.

Get some of the free downloads from Iobit.com. ASC and smart defrag are a couple that I use on the computer I built a while back. Running great.
