So, 2 out of my 3 kids were in the recent youth pen contest. Rebecca :bananen_smilies008:, my oldest, likes to turn whenever she can. She is the main reason I picked up a lathe in the first place. Josh , my youngest, did well in the contest and was really thrilled with the prizes. He now WANTS to make HIS pens (the kits he won). Cole :bananen_smilies026:, the middle child, did not participate in the contest. However, he has seen the loot that both his older and younger sibs collected from the contest. Now he has been asking to turn.

On a busy week I don't get any time on the lathe. On a "good" week I might get 3 or 4 hours of turning time spread out over a couple of days.

I had about an hour tonight and was thinking about a Masur Birch blank that I have ready to turn. However, I spent some great time with the boys  &:bananen_smilies026:helping them select pen blanks and kits they wanted to turn. They helped cut drill and glue the blanks.

Next time I have some turning time the boys will want to turn their pens.

Becca :bananen_smilies008:also has a project or 3 lined up and ready.

I love having the opportunity to do this with my kids :bananen_smilies026::RockOn::bananen_smilies008:. Some of my fondest memories are building furniture with my Dad  when I was their age. But at this rate I might not get to "my" stuff for a couple of weeks . . . or longer!:eek:

I guess that is a good problem to have.

Thanks to all,
Dave

Dave Rebeccas Pen left today with by chance 4 blanks could make one each. Let me know when they arrive kind regards Peter.

Neat to work with your kids when mine were this age I was working 3 jobs for many years you see we had twice as many kids to provide for.

Oh you poor thing. Can't get to the lathe cause of the kids.:at-wits-end: What a problem you have!!!:biggrin: You lucky dog. These are precious times I wish could go back and redo things like that.:crying:

Thanks for adding to my problem Peter . It has been a neat experience talking and exchanging items with someone on the other side of the globe.

Besides doing something with your children......you are building memories that will last a life time. Someone already said "........another lathe."......look at the advantage of not having to think to hard about b-day or Xmas gifts. You KNOW what they are looking at and want.
Maybe a lathe shared by the children. Maybe one owned by the three of them equally. Each household chore is given time on the lathe? No, that will ruin the hobby/fun for them.
Just enjoy everything that is happening..........they grow so fast.

Be happy always.

My son, nearing 40, talks occasionally about the time he spent making pens. Seemed insignificant at the time---but it sends a quiver up my back now (might be a tinge of pride).

HOWEVER, I turned a LOT of pens, so when he went to bed, I spent another couple hours at the lathe. Enjoyed them, too!!

Count your blessings....in he words of an old song

Where are you going my little one
where are you going my baby my own
Turn around and you're 2
Turn around and you're 4
Turn around and you're and young (man/maiden) going out of the door.

The thing that will amaze you is how fast they're grown and gone.

Oh, just make the credit card sing! Problem solved, except for the payments.

Thats a simple fix, Lathes all around for Christmas and Birthdays. What a site it would be to see everyone lined up doing their thing.... Im trying to get my boys into it. My youngest has Tourettes and OCD and ADHD, he got distracted about half way through and quite. My oldest hasnt done it yet, and I am worried that when he does I will have your same problem

We got Angelina a 3ds so she is highly distracted, I have been in the shop doing some stuff, I have turned just a little.
