I submitted an idea at work on how to save time and money. The money saved is for the customer. When we do decking on the ship, a lot of times someone walks on the deck and messes it up. That causes problems with scheduling and costs the customer more money, but affects our rewards (companies). So my idea was secure trail cams in the pways. Get one person caught on there, just about guarantee he is the last.

The guy who is responsible for researching my idea and implimenting it told me that they are going to "try" it. There should be a financial bonus in it for me, but what do you think they will back out?

Although not a court of law, I'm not sure what releases would need to be endorsed to photograph someone with/without their approval...especially if used to reprimand an employee.

However... What a fantastic idea!

No releases or notices are required for a company to put cameras in most employee areas. Only areas like bathrooms and locker rooms are problematic.

Security Camera's are about everywhere - don't think anyone would have a real complaint about them on the job, particularily if there is a sound business reason.

The person who is getting this implimented sent me an email yesturday asking me to print out some sources for them to buy some. So it seems they are heading on with this, they just have to figure out my "award".

How about a year"s supply of pen blanks?!!!

Oh I talked to the guy that is heading that program, and he said they don't have a "budget" to do the awards to people. But don't get discouraged.

Suggestion Program

The company I worked for had a 'suggestion' program - if an employee submitted a suggestion that was accepted the employee got 20% of the first years savings with a minimum of $25.00 - $100.00 (the minimum was for suggestions that were good for business reasons but didn't save much money). The program saved the company Millions the highest award while I worked there was on the order of $900,000. Over the years I had, about 25 or 30 accepted suggestions with awards from $25 to $2000. Maybe you can suggest that your company put a program like that in place.

Henry Ford had one of the first reward systems for good ideas. I forget the exact percentage, but it was like 30-40% of money saved after related costs. They really did not implement anything that costs more to do than they saved.

Well see this idea is more of a save the governemnt money, save us work disruptions and delays, and better relationship with the ship. If someone (and not sure who it is) messes up the deck, the gov't ends up paying anyways.

Actually I think there is a government program that gives the contractor some bottom line profit for ideas that directly save them costs...There used to be anyway and we got some big awards under it when we came up with money saving ideas.

They have awards for meeting dates, and those things. The 2500 for a small decking is not worth risking the award fee...

They called what we did Value Engineering and if we came up with a process or a change that saved the government say a million dollars, we got half of that and they got half....and our half went straight to the bottom line not subject to the 10% maximum profit allowed against the contract. It was nice when we could come up with something.
