If you were to make a pen that represents the world and would have universal appeal, what design would you recommend? This is a brainstorming session and
your ideas are welcomed. The pen would be made out of wood and ideally be a segmented style.

Just trying to get some ideas and I know that we have many creative folks here that provide good input towards these types of questions. Share you thoughts and hit me with something. Looking forward to your commen(s).

The posted pen is a great idea to build on.Wonder if a similar design could be laser cut using colorful woods from the different continents.Ivory for the poles.

Why not start with a little smaller idea? Like a pen for each state with the wood that is the states tree?
I don't know if it is possible, but what a collection that would be.

One pen:

Wood should be African mahogany, taken from the railing of a ship from Europe, which was piloted around the world in the age of sail - salvaged from the wreck by a team from Denmark, based out of Greenland. Inlaid into the wood are strips of aluminum, one of Canada's biggest exports. Hardware plated in copper (most of which is mined in South America), and assembled into a kit in China before being purchased from a supplier in Australia.

Pen crafted in the US, and sold to a scientist doing research in Antarctica, whom you met at a Russian embassy party while on tour in the middle east.

Anything else would just be a compromise!

How many woods are named after locales, like Brazilian cherry, African mahogany, buckeye burl, IBO.....? Find a representative from each continent, and add include some blue mahoe for the oceans.

Some great ideas so far. Please keep them coming. Always knew that the IAP community has good answers to any and all pen related postings.

Thank you IAP members.

Another thought. Are there many other woods out there that have religious significance, like BOW? I'm thinking that you could focus on the major religions across the world, instead of the geography. I don't think that's exactly what you had in mind, but that's brainstorming for you.

I'll check my stock, may have a few.....LOL

I see scaloped ends in white Holley for the polar caps, a blue dyed wood like maple burl for the ocean and then either green dyed maple for the center or a brown or tan burl with lots of eyes in the center.

Hello but if I want to represent the universe? Space? Astronomy?
Which wood or wood segment can represent this?
