Bought a new Campbell Hausfeld 30 gallon belt driven, oil lube compressor today from Tractor Supply. I had a damaged belt cover so I got it for less than the 20 gallon model I went in for.

I got it home and removed the ramians of the belt guard so it would be out of the way, it's going to sit with the belt towards the wall so shouldn't be an issue.

It's in the correct range for oil level so I plug it in and hit the switch to give it a test.

HMMMMM, but no rotation. I turned it off. tried again with the same results. left it on and it trips the breaker. Double check, 15 amp tool, 20 amp circuit. Should be getting enough power. turn off everything and unplug. Try to rotate the wheels by hand.

I can rotate the compressor wheel, but the motor wheel will only rotate about a half turn before it stops. Back and forth it fine in that half, but stops if you try to go beyond that half.

Shouldn't the electirc motor be able to turn freely?

I'll have to take it back if the motor is damaged.

Is it the correct supply voltage, some of the motors can be set up for either 110v or 220v.

Motor doesn't mention a 220 option and the stock corp is a 110.

My main concern is about not being able to rotate the wheels by hand. If I should be able to I have a big problem, if not then maybe not enough power on the circuit.

Sounds like the electric motor might have a bend on the inside that could be catching. Maybe more got damaged then just the belt gaurd.

My advice? Take it back. If it isn't turning freely, there is more wrong then any discount will cover. Depending on how far you traveled, you might get a refund on the gas. 10 miles? NO.......50 Miles? I would ask because it isn't your fault the compressor doesn't work.

I just went and had a closer look at my compressor. It's a 80gallon IR and the motor turns over easily by hand with the belt off. The motor shaft is beefy so I think the most likely cause of what you describe would be a foreign object in the motor housing. If they took the guard off they might have lost a nut or something in the process. Might be worth trying to see inside the housing with an inspection lamp before you return it. Failing that it could have bent the shaft but it could also just be a dud.

That's what I was afraid of. Bent shaft or something jamming it up.

I'll see if I can pull the end off of the motor and have a look, but won't put much effort into it.

The Tractor Supply store is just a couple miles and I'm there at least once a week for dog food, so no big deal to return. Worse comes to worse, I get the 20 gal model which will serve my purposes fine, the 30 gal was a vertical unit which would have been nicer. Maybe they have another with a broken piece......

Took it back today and swapped it for an undamaged 20gal unit. Had to pay an extra $26 bucks for the smaller undamaged unit. Got it home and did a quick test and it works as it should. Assembled a manifold with two outlets for hoses and realized I forgot the oil. I'll pick that up on my way home tomorrow and be set for the weekend. Definitely quieter than the pancake compressor.
