Don't tell me that hummingbird doesn't understand where it's dinner comes from. I walked out the door and he hovered right in front of my face about a foot a way and gave me a piece of his mind. His feeder was empty. This time of year there isn't much for them to eat in the desert and they empty the feeder pretty fast. He certainly knew who was to blame.:mad:

For such a tiny animal, they really have an attitude don't they. I have them buzz my 75 pound pitbull if she's in an area of the back yard they don't want her to be in. I can't imagine what they'd be like if they were the size of Turkey Vultures. Beautiful little creatures with lots of attitude and fun to watch.

Sometimes by my feeder it's fight night. They swoop down on each other and smack heads. The sound it makes you would think they would knock each other out.

We used to take our travel trailer up to a friend's ranch in Flagstaff for the summer. One year there was a bad drought so we put out a hummingbird feeder hanging on the front awning of the trailer. Within a day we had about 20 hummers so we bought a second, then a third, and finally a fourth feeder. We had up to 70 or so birds feeding at one time. Early in the morning, the feeders would be empty and there were so many hummers flying outside the windows and "chipping" at us that it would wake us up. They would land on my head while I was hanging the feeders. I guess they were really hard up to find anything to feed on that year.

They are VERY territorial. We have one in our yard (Napoleon) who tries to drive all the others away so finally we hung a second feeder on the other side of the house. He tries to defend them both!

I put these little monsters in the same category as Chihuahua's. If they were larger we would not be in the position we are in at the top of the food chain. I watch these at my in-laws and they act like they want to kill each other sometimes. Must be something in the water.

They are beautiful birds. We have had a few in our yard but very seldom more then 4 or 5. We have had them land on our hands as we are eating outside in the evening. Stunning is the only word I can find to discribe them.

My mother has a hummingbird feeder, but they refuse to use it. They much prefer her butterfly bush, and gather in groups around it. They also like her Trumpeter vines and Lupine flowers.

I hate ya'll. :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
We get maybe 1 or 2 hummers once or twice a year (if we're lucky) for maybe 3 days.

I tried the same thing and had the same issue. Soon as I put second feeder up one bird would sit on electric line where he could see both feeders and attack any other hummer that ventured in for a meal.

We put out a feeder but just can't seem to draw them. We have had one so far this year and she's only been here about twice....we also have many red flowers which they say will attract them....we also have lots of yellow flowers aroung.....Count your blessings if you have a lot.

We also have problems attracting gold finches but we have plenty of house finches and many sparrows..red wing black birds, mourning doves, robins, brown headed cowbirds, grackels and a bunch of others like us though.

I get a few of them here at the house

Today for the second time I saw our ladderbacked woodpecker feeding at the hummingbird feeder. He spends most of his time drumming on the aluminum streetlight to announce his territory. He's been here for years (had to replace the streetlight twice because of him) but this is the first time I've seen him at the hummingbird feeder. There is a water dish just below the feeder, so I know he is after the sugar water, not just thirsty. I'll try to get a picture of him if I can. The resident hummingbird was creating a racket so I looked out to see what he was fussing about. He was smart enough not to try to attack the woodpecker, though.
