Yesterday, I had a very stressful day and I turned to the IAP as a sounding board, seeking guidance and as a place to vent. This has always been a place to gain valuable insight on virtually ANY topic.

In hindsight, THIS TOPIC COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE INAPPROPRIATE! In the future, I will keep my topics on relevant, pen making topics.

The ONLY bright spot that followed my bone-headed post is that we WERE able to have a civil International conversation on a very sensitive topic without being moderated.

Please forgive my error, and I'll stay on point from here forward.

You made no error by posting and starting the whole discussion. I may not agree with you but what I dont agree with is the action..not the man behind the action. You have the right to feel and say whatever you want and should not feel you should have to apologize for doing so. We all have pen making in common but in alot of cases that might be the only connection but its a connection!!

Thanks, Jason. Think of all of that energy that could have gone toward "making a better pen".

I think of this place as "family", as sometimes I do stupid things with my "local" family, too.

My post may have discouraged people looking for quality pen making information to "back up". If that happens, that is a tragedy!

Andy I had no problem with your post only with the direction is was going, I think after 20-30 post on the thread we all knew why you felt the way you did.

Thanks, Roy! I wish I had just titled it "Wear your company shirt when dealing with the public" and let it go at that. I think perhaps I was seeking "forgiveness" from my family for making a HARD decision.

Live and learn:biggrin:

Sorry, I won't forgive you because I don't feel you made an error. You attempted to reach out to like minded people(pen turners) regarding something that you were concerned about--and concerns almost all of us to differing degree, I would imagine.

Its the non-thinker who keeps this stuff inside, without sharing or having an opinion.

Keep it up. I've always taught others how to think for themselves and not follow the dominant paradigm.

Andy,

I'm with you on the original post, since I felt that your original intent was to get companies to somehow identify their employees.

I work in an industrial area, and EVERYONE has a badge, even the visitors. You don't get past the armed security guards without one. However, if I didn't work here, but in a more publicly accessible place, the badges/nametags/shirts would still be a good idea.

I wish that perhaps those who attacked you for your post and called you names would apologize. It is traumatic to do what you felt you needed to do and after doing so and sharing your trauma many posted in such a way to make it worse. I for one don't believe you have any need to apologize.

You acted with ...

all available knowledge.

Those who were not there can cast stones but they do not know your position or your circumstances.

You acted with the thought of the safety of those around you.

You did well.

As long as it was civil, it was good entertainment. If every thread was only pen related we wouldn't get to know much about each other. 3 languages? Magna Cum Laude? 2 businesses? Who knew? Post on.

My 2 cents, since I was the one who stopped the conversation. I agree that the thread was fine overall. It was just getting a little to far into the grey area at times. The thread had points that were getting a bit heated now and then, and too close into the name calling/personal attack space at times. All threads die out eventually, I just pushed this one into its end before things got any worse.

This way no single IAP user got moderated in the thread and the moderators didn't have to deal with the "why didn't x get deleted too" if someone stepped too far over the line. Just so its clear - there is no single person behind why I closed it.

Think nothing of it!

Andy,

We've all been there, all too often.

You were perfectly in line to come to IAP. We're a huge family!!!

I had chest pain yesterday PM. I learned something in the past. Don't be a hard head (stupid stubborn pride). One heart attack in 91 and bypass in 99. Called cardiologist, got in immediately. Checked out, did some blood work, and they'll do a look and see tomorrow to be safe and take care of anything. Hey, I'm so close to retirement. Not going to let this ruin my life now. Have too much to live for.

Take it light, but seriously,

Charlie

WOW!!! I sure wish I hadn't missed it!! :eek::laugh::laugh::laugh:
You didn't miss it. Unless of course a Martian (or other ET or a super powerful earthling of unknown ethnic, religion, gender or smoking status, :biggrin:with the power to penetrate minds - to remain politically correct) temporarily took over your body unbeknownst to you and made post #66 in the thread replying to my post #64.

I really enjoyed reading it and didn't see anything wrong with it at all.

Alphageek always seems to come in if things are not quite right and settle things down we should all thank you Dean for being around and showing such a cool head in the face of adversity.

It's amazing how an 'off topic' thread can take off so quick

I never commented on the backpack thread but fully understand (to the point of being able to imagine) that you would have been quite unnerved in that situation as hundreds of thousands of others no doubt would have been as well.

There was a comment - stereotypes exist for a reason - that reason, because they are generally true, not absolute but often true. For risk of setting something off I'll try and tread carefully. If the bible is inspired by God, that is is his word then one might say god stereotypes. Again not in an absolute sense but it happens. Somewhere it refers to a particular race as 'liars' think it was creatans.

Forums are a place for many of us where we have friends and a place to vent, a place for support etc. for some this is what keeps us normal. The 'crime' would be if you were not able to speak. Again I did not read every post but what I did read did not appear to be getting out of control and if some did I do not believe that was your intent, that is where some others went.

Thanks for that - the mods job is seldom a fun one... The good thing is people have been very well behaved in general. There's been very few deletes, etc lately. (That is NOT a complaint and I will smack anyone who thinks that's a license to be bad!:eek::eek: )

Hey, I'm 75 and thought it was like a fishing license at my age I don't need one.....

Good heavens Andy. I am always in trouble with the site. Ask Smitty. I am humbled quite often for my thoughts. But this is about YOU. Takes guts to apologize for what you think might be a transgression.

John, the only issue I ever have with you is when you post your political thoughts on China (and then only when it's in a thread where I am OP). I have the same thoughts about a number of countries - but this ain't the place.

Penman- I was sympathizing with you. I installed heating and cooling in homes and business. My costumers were told about when I would be there. Enough about me. That got me in so I could let them see the person I was. "And we wore Obvious uniforms with ID." I expect no less from every one Else too. And don't act suspicious. I will react! With the amount of care the action allows. But I do enjoy trying to be as nice to every one as I can. All that said, I do really enjoy people. Have a good day.

Okay. I'll mind my manners a little better.
