Need Airconditioning Help

I turned my AC on today. The outside unit is blowing cool air. The inside of the house is like 90 degrees. The coil and lines are not frozen. I just had the outside fan replaced over the winter because I was getting no heat. The motor could go clockwise or counter clockwise. Can he have hooked it up wrong??

Jeff; I would think your unit should be blowing hot air not cool. Odd as it seems, you need hot air to cool. Normaly there could be two things not working properly. 1 your unit is not pumping coolent through your system. Bad pump or broken impeller. 2 you lost the coolent in your unit. Cracked fitting or a leak in the heat exchanger unit. Now as for the motor being hooked up wrong. If it runs the pump and it is running backwards, the vanes in the pump will not seal in order to move the coolant. I would call your service man and tell him that since they changed the fan, your air is not working. Jim S

First do you have a conventional A/C unit or is it a heat pump. A heat pump will run when heating in the winter but a conventional A/C will only run when cooling. If it is a heat pump there is a reversing valve near the outside compressor which requires a 24 volt signal to operate in cooling mode this could be the problem. One way to tell if the fan is running in the right direction is if air is moving through the coil and up out of the outside unit. If the fan seems to try to suck air down toward the compressor then it is running backwards. If you could give a little more info on the type of heating and air system you have I may be able to steer you in the right direction.

I understand it should be hot air. That is why I am worried it is blowning cool. Doug, It is a goodman/janitrol split system heat pump.. I can feel the air being blowing out the top of the outside unit. How can I check the reversing value? What do I set the meter to?

My guess is the compressor is not running. do you hear a humm outside along with the fan? possible the capacitor went bad on the compressor or the compressor itself went bad. I would caution replacing the Cap yourself and if you do take solid notes where the wires are on the Cap so when you get a new one you put them back correctly. You will have to take it with you to the AC shop so they can match it up.

The fact that the unit is blowing cool air and the vents inside are blowing warm air in the house leads me to believe it is running in heating mode. Check the copper lines hooked to the outside unit the larger line should be cool/cold and the small liquid line warm/hot. A heat pump is basically an A/C running backwards it takes the heat from outside and puts it in your house. Most of the time when the outside unit is blowing cool air instead of hot it means the unit is not cooling. Meaning it is not drawing the warmer air from the house and imparting cooler air into it. The first thing I would have checked is the freon level. The compressor does not engage if the freon has dropped too low. This would seem to be the case, especially if it has been a while since you had someone put freon in the unit. The freon escapes through use, leaks, etc. over time. We have ours checked and topped off every summer to maximize the cooling capacity of the units. We have 7 units on the property. Some need freon and some don't. The next time it may be different units that need it.

Thanks. It's just that I am not EPA certified so I tried to troubleshoot it on my own. I will get someone in to get the system checked.

The bolded bit points to a classic installation issue. Clearly, the installer mistakenly installed your outside unit inside and the inside unit outside. Just switch them and you should be fine.

Note, if you are experiencing this while using a 'window' AC unit, you want to simply turn the unit 180 degrees.

Sounds like what some call a starter kit. I had a similar problem a couple of times a few years ago.

Sometimes a capacitor goes out that prevents the compressor from turning on when you turn on the AC. Symptoms usually show up as the AC blowing hot stuffy air from the inside fan turning on.

Replacing the capacitor solved the problem when I had them. I call the AC folks and they fixed it with a simple service call.

Thanks all.. My friend replaced the capacitor and contactor. Got the system running and blowing hot air on the outside unit. But the liquid line (1/4") is not Hot as it should be. The suction (3/4") is sweating like it should.
