Pen Cases???

Does anyone use the pen cases with the drawers for shows??? I was thinking of going this route in the future. It would help with display, help with transport, and help with theft. Any thoughts pro or con???

Also if you do use them where did you get it??? What are some features to look for??? Has to be able to hold at least a Majestic size pen.

If you made your own do you have photos??? I was thinking of this route also. Not sure if I want to invest the time.

I have looked into this John, and I found that most of the ones available in a reasonable price range did not have the capacity for my collection which is likely to be a smaller quantity (around 90 pens) than most folks take to shows. Custom Pens, Wood Pen Gift, Handcrafted Wooden Pens, Fine Writing Instruments – Lanier Pens has a ton of display stuff at their website - but it ain't cheap.

I am leaning more and more to making my own after seeing some of those prices. I think I can do just as well. Have a few ideas but time is the key factor. Would like to have it for next show season in the fall. Will see what happens. Thanks all.

I do both. I line some with adhesive backed peel and stick felt. And at other times I use solid wood with 'routed' slots/grooves. In the end it comes down to personal preference

I will line mine because I feel it will protect from scratching on a hard surface. Remeber you want to sell the pen in as pristine condition as you can. Whatever happens when the customer buys it is in their hands. Just my thoughts on that question.

I've been thinking for some time of using "flocking" for the inside of a pen box. Basically you put adhesive (don't know what kind) on the surface and then shower the sticky stuff with the flocking. Winds up looking like felt. I'm thinking there are a number of places you can get it like craft stores, on line (Rockler, etc). Anybody used it?

I have just made one for 24 pens used liftout trays with dowles for spacers and craft felt for protection the pens are held in place with a round elastic looped in and out over each pen works well. It could be expaned to however many pens you want by useing drawers

I'm not sure if this is what your thinking about, but I used a wood engineers tool box for my pen displays and transport for the first 5 years I did pen shows... this isn't a picture of mine, but is very similar.... mine is a 10 draw chest that my sons bought for me at a Sam's club about 12 +/- years ago... you can get them at Harbor Freight now for about $80 on sale.

When I was doing just pens, key rings and little things, this handled my entire show inventory, working tools for the show and about everything else I needed except the tables and table cloths.
My box doesn't have the lift up front, it just has a slat that fits over the front of the drawers to keep them from sliding out.

Chuck that is pretty cool and yes this is the lines I am thinking about. Have to look into this abit more.

Someone asked about flocking. I have used this on some scrollsawn projects years ago and yes it works well. The adhesive is actually paint. The kits will come with the color paint that matches the flocking. A bit of a learning curve in that you need to plan your work. You do not not want to end in the middle of a project and try to pick it up later. You will seel an ugly line of mess. (don't ask)
