I used an e-reader for the first time last night. Didn't like it. And what is up with the cost of e-books only being a dollar or two less than a paper book?

I know there are people who LOVE their e-readers and our library does the e-lending so there is no need to buy the book, but I just did not like the experience. I did like the lack of glare on the screen. I used my brother's ipad for all of 10 minutes before I got fed up with the glare.

I think I am turning into a 42 year old curmudgeon. I'm going to hike my pants up to my arm pits grab my walker and go work on a pen after work today.

I'm 56 and I like the Kindle app on my iPad. I also prefer hardback books for anything I think I'll want to keep around after reading. But you can get a lot of good content in the free - $5 range. If the price gets close to the paper version, I'd still choose the paper version. Now if I wanted to take the book/content with me on a trip, the Kindle version would be the way to go, because the iPad is going with me regardless.

As for glare, it's simply a matter of positioning yourself so it's dark behind you instead of bright. And of course its great at night because you don't need a light on behind you to read as you do with a paper book or the earlier kindles (I got my mom a Kindle paperwhite that lights up so it works at night).
 
Just bought a new e-book on Amazon. It was $3.+ dollars less expensive than a paperback version. Also bought my previous one at Amazon instead of Costco and saved $2.00 over a hardback version.

I've used the Kindle app on my iPad ever since the iPad forst came out and have saved almost $1000 over physical books. I read voraciously -- when I get tired of standing in front of my lathe. I have also reclaimed space on top of all my tables by converting to e-books. YMMV.

BTW, I am almost 68 and love e-books.

I have a Kindle Fire HD and think it's the best thing since sliced bread!!:biggrin:
Music, Films, Books, Email, Internet, even a camera. Love it!!
I also use it to store dozens and dozens of my work manuals for the stuff I work on. ( PDF files )

At first I struggled with the brightness, but then found the settings and now it's cool. I almost burnt my retinas off while reading in bed with the main light out!!:eek:

I spend half my life in hotel restaurants and pubs and it is much easier to read than a book in dim lighting.
I also download loads of geeky tech books that are dirt cheap compared to hardcopies.
Current books ( novels ) are slightly cheaper than hardcopies too.
A big bonus is that you can easily enlarge the font so that you don't even need your specs, if you wear them. :biggrin:
 
I have a Kindle and while I don't read it as much as i thought I would, I like that I can store my entire library in a small compact machine.... I plan to take most of my hard cover books to the local book store and sell them... open up some shelf space and gain a little $$$ too. Win/win
 
I sympathize with how you feel. The ergonomics of a book are much better than an e-reader. An e-reader, however, allows you to carry a whole library around with you in the same physical space.

I'm reading this forum on my iPad right now! I enjoy catching up with all of the "pen info" while sitting in bed and relaxing at the end of the day.
 
I have a 9" pad (no name) and hate it for anything other than e-books.
I like paper or hardcover books better, but can't really beat the convenience
of the e-reader. I have a 4GB card in it.. and I couldn't read enough books
to fill that. Calibre lets me change formats if someone gives me a book.
There's a ton of free books out there.. good excuse for me to catch up
on classics I somehow missed when I skipp ... er.. took literature classes.

Absolutely hate a tablet for getting online. Can't even stand a laptop. Takes
to long to type that I forget what I was going to say. So .. I'd have to bring
along a separate keyboard. And it looks cool when people zip their finger
across the screen, make pinching motions and such. but I need a mouse.
While we're at it, even the big tablets have very tiny text that I can't read..

it does have a nice calculator.. and angry birds..
