So the wife and I have decided to leave sunny South Africa and move to Auckland and whats the first thing I did??

Google NZ woods to turn :biggrin:

Huge decision and lots of work ahead but in the end probably the best decision we've made. Unfortunately this country and its dicktator are going the way of the rest of the African countries.

Hopefully I'll bump into a few Kiwi turners along the way....

Terry - NZ is a hotbed of truly talented woodturners. There must be something in the water there that imbues so many with so much talent. If I was going to emigrate, NZ would be at the top of my list.

Good Luck, I Moved from Argentina to Canada 10 years ago and was the best decision we took in our entire life, and the cold is not so bad either!!
 
Thanks lads, still very much in the infancy stages so it'll probably only happen towards the end of the year or early 2014.

Still have to convince the Kiwi's we're upstanding citizens :D
 
Oh boy, Terry- what a big move! Congratulations. If I were to emigrate, I think NZ would be at the top of my list, too. Very beautiful country by the look of it, and similar in some ways to Canada, I think.

We made 2 international moves in 3 yrs (to the States and back). Quite stressful, but doable. Will you be moving most of your furniture/shop? Also, it's kind of funny to say, but we suffered from culture shock- even though the USA is very close and familiar to us! Don't be surprised, is all I'm saying.

All the best of luck....At least they will speak the same language (sort of) you do ---- that's an assumption, you write English so well I assume you speak it also.

Yes indeed Catherine, definitely a culture shock - we won't have to look over our shoulder all the time or have armed response with helicopters to protect us becuase the police can no longer do so etc

Fortunately I have been there, albeit back in 2004, for two months and travelled the entire island, north and south, (except Invercargill - the kiwis will understand why hehe). My sister has been resident there now for almost 17 years so having her support will also help.

We will be moving some of the household items and the ENTIRE shop :biggrin: lock stock and barrel. The down side is that a few of the goodies are banned from imprtation into NZ. Most of them, however, already have homes in the states - I just need to get around to packing and shipping them.

hahahaha, yip Smitty, I'm of Irish heritage and therefore am quite capable of speaking the Queens english when required to do so :biggrin: (clearly I'm a northerner) I suppose that makes me more of a Brit than an Irishman then?

Well Terry I've already confused South Africa for South South America so I'll probably confuse New Zealand for Newfoundland. All the best in your move.
 
I didn't realize South Africa was getting so bad. Maybe I don't pay enough attention to the new or it hasn't made the "Main Stream Media" here in the states. Best of luck in your move hope all goes smoothly. What all is involved outside of moving you possessions? Years ago we check into moving the Australia and boy was that complicated there were so many requirements that we just forgot about it.
 
I guess that the grass is actually greener in NZ, but if I could guarantee that I'd find a job, then I'd move back to SA in a heartbeat.
I could be persuaded to move to Oz though!! :)

After all, there are jobs everywhere (McDonald's, Burger King, Best Buy)
The weather is SPECTACULAR about one week out of every year!
The lake is gorgeous---overlook the 'floaters" from Milwaukee's untreated sewage.
And the infrastructure (roads and highways) are resurfaced every few months, so travel is always an "adventure"-who KNOWS what major arteries will be closed!?!?!

Even with ALL THAT going for us, you chose New Zealand????

Well, all I can say is "GOOD LUCK" and stay safe!!!

Ed, whilst I appreciate the offer of being your neighbour I'm afraid the "floaters" kinda sealed the deal for NZ - but thanks anyways :biggrin::biggrin:
That said, I would love to live in walking distance of Exotics.

I know in my mind that moving out of SA in '97 was the right move for me and my family but there is something about SA that I will always miss.
I think if I can save enough money before I retire, then I might look at a gated place in Knysna or George.

Hey, isn't Oscar's plek becoming vacant soon?? I believe he's moving to a more secure place too.:rolleyes:

I will certainly miss braaivleis, boerewors, Castle, rugby, sunny skies etc but I will most certainly not miss Chevrolet dude!!

Damn straight it was the right move - wish I had done so myself!

Oscars premises in upmarket Silverlakes Golf Estate is already vacant - he's still behind bars although he will probably be let out on bail by Friday at latest. The state just dont have a case to keep him incarcerated.
