I think poplar wouldn't finish that clean. Generally a lot more yellows and browns. I've always considered poplar paint grade as it stains like crap..... might be good for turning though.

Looking at the first picture, I thought Poplar.
Looking at the pen, I thought Magnolia, sometimes a poplar relative.
But these are WAGs and in no way any where near certain.

The staining in your piece is very common in citrus (as evident in the linked picture).
