Only nine months. That all the time we had with her. And it was eight and a half months longer than she needed to carve a place in our hearts.

She was found running stray by a woman. She took her in and took her to the vet. A vet tech took over her care as the woman couldn't keep her. The vet tech reached out to us as she knew we took in special needs pups. She was old (somewhere north of 10), had a large tumor on her leg, and she was deaf. We said yes, of course. She came home with us. Got groomed and found a place on the couch. She stayed by my side whenever she could. And put all the others in their places. Even the "kids" (2-5 year old spunky huskies) respected her and flinched when she spoke. They tried to stay out of her way. She loved going for car rides with her mom and short walks with me when I got home, and would roll in the yard. She loved life with us. She developed a spring in her step that she didn't have when we first got her.

She passed away last night in her sleep. Napping with one of her pack mates. Only nine months. More than was needed. But way too few.

I am very sorry for your loss. She was a member of your family and she knew it. Take comfort in knowing that she was truly grateful for the love you showed her over the last 9 months.
 
I hate hearing about losses like this. But it is obvious that her last few months were happy and that she was well loved. Bless you for taking care of her.

I believe that there's a special place in Heaven for people like you and your wife that care for Gods creatures when nobody else will. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly dogs forgive and forget. We have a pit mix that was used as a bait dog here in the Atlanta area. When we got her from a no-kill shelter, she was in terrible shape with a large chunk about 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches missing of her upper lip/muzzle from where it was torn off. She was covered in scars and extremely emaciateed. Yet, now she is without a doubt the sweetest dog we've ever had )even though she reminds me of Phantom of the Opera everytime I look at her face).

Sorry for your loss... She left peacefully & I'm sure she was grateful for your care towards the end of her life. I just don't know how some people can abandon or desert their pets as they get older.

After adam and eve were cast out of paradise god was sitting in his favorite chair contemplating what he should do. He looked down at the dog curled at his feet and said unto it "you better get down there and teach them two a little about loyalty."

It is never easy mike Nine months is better than no months.
 
Nice story Mike, very generous of your family for taking in and loving a senior. It had to be very traumatic for her to loose her pack, but very fortunate to find you.

:frown::frown: Sorry for your loss !! My wife and I also take in stray cats and dogs. There is no better feeling than to know that you have given these little souls the care and love they deserved. There are no words to discribe the joy of hearing that purr, or see that wagging tail when you enter the house. When they pass, it's like loseing a member of the family. It is a lost member of the family !!! Thank goodness for people like you who are willing to reach out to these animals with special needs and make there last days the best they can be !! So sorry for your loss. Dogs are the only thing that has such unconditional love. It's very hard to loss man's best friend.
 
Thank you for rescuing dogs. It is nice to know that there are people out there like you and your family. I am saddened by your loss, but happy that this older dog had such a nice last few months.

This one is a little harder on me for some reason. I had to leave for a business trip that morning so I did not get to see her after she passed.

As some know, we have a large pack. All rescues, ages ranging from 2 - 18 years.
