Yes, Face protection is mandatory!!

This happened this last weekend.

8 " maple bowl (A Christmas Present for my Mom)

The shard that broke off hit me in the face. Fortunately, I was wearing my face shield.

Been there, done that and had the black eye to prove it... be safe and wear your face shield.... I put mine on now BEFORE I switch on the lathe.

So, tell us the story of your adventure with crappy wood! Whu hoppen?

Actually, it wasn't crappy wood... it was a very nice piece and the bowl turned out beautifully, it was about 10 or 11 inches diameter and wouldn't fit my Cole jaws so I put it in a home made Longworth chuck to finish the bottom ... I had a slight tear out and wanted to fix that before I sanded... a very light touch with the scraper evidently caught in the tear out and slung the bowl out of the chuck... I had just taken the face shield off just before I touched the bowl... after I got up and looked around to see who hit me, thinking maybe Mike Tyson had slipped up behind me, I started looking for the bowl which landed about 10 feet away... still intact and only a very slight dent where it hit either the roof, the back work bench or my face....

Mine was definitely substandard wood. The maple cracked after harvest (I didn't get the pith out in time). I knew it was cracked going in and was doing my best to be careful. The plan was to go slow and then fill the voids with colored resin. Catching on a crack altered those plans significantly. A moment of impatience cost me the whole project. That was my last piece of large stock on hand as well.

Best laid plans...

I'm glad you are okay, Terry! That could have been bad. Chuck's could have too. It only takes a split second for a turning, or part of a turning to unass itself, folks! DAMHIKT! If you are fortunate, it goes away from you. But sometimes it comes straight at you. Safety cannot be taken for granted in this, or any other hobby where power tools, or other sharp things are involved.

Good man Terry!! I get slammed by a lot of mod's for my badgering of people for face AND LUNG protection! I swear I am so tired of taking care of people that say "I heard about lung stuff but I didn't thing it would get me" Well guess what...it did and now I have to pull the plug on you with your family in the room. And no, that is not an exaggeration...just a stupid fact. Wear 'em both...make your RT happy. After all...it was National Respiratory Care Week just last week!

Glad you had your face shield on. I don't turn without one. Lynn Yamaguchi, a turner in Arizona had a piece come off her lathe last month and it hit her in the side of her face and smashed her eye orbit, nose, etc. It will be many surgeries before she will be okay and their is question about her vision. You can never be overly cautious. It only takes a second for accidents to happen. Everyone please take a second and be safe.

That's just a bad black eye.
Time and again, a reminder for us to take safety precautionary measures at all times. Mishaps can just happen in a snap.
