So I place an order with Penn State on Saturday and it shipped today. UPS tracking info shows delivery to be next Monday. WTF? Should it really take a week to get something from Pennsylvania to Texas? I get priority mail shipments all the way from New York in two days. It's my new collet chuck and tailstock mounted drill chuck, and I want 'em now!!!:befuddled:

That's still good IMO, I think we expect too much these days.

FWIW it would take 2-3 times that to get to me in Canada, and I'm fine with it.

I agree with you Andrew about expecting to much, but I placed an order with PSI last thursday morning and I recieved it today. I was totally shocked at it getting here so fast, especially after reading some of the horror stories that I've read on this site about them. I know for a fact, that I will be purchasing from them again, and I don't expect my next order to arrive so promptly, but who cares? I've got all the time in the world to wait, and I wish more people would slow down just a little, and not be so impatient. That last statement was meant for no one specific, it is meant for or directed to the general public. I mean, wasn't so much nicer and easier to get along years ago, when everybody wasn't going at breakneck speed. I sure do miss those days, of honesty, good service and friendliness. Sorry for getting off topic.

Seems that PSI is on the ball but the UPS ball is going flat! I wish PSI would use priority mail. That's why I usually order from their resellers who do use USPS priority mail.
Do a good turn daily!

When you order through their website is where I've read where most of the horror stories come from. I've called them everytime and my stuff shows up In about 4 days and I'm in VA

I do all my ordering online. Usually do 3 day select, bt then they don't process order for 2-3 days. You have to get them on the phone to get any kind of customer service, otherwise your s.o.l.. They are by far my least favorite vendor.

Whether it is PSI, Woodcraft, or others they now ship to the local postal distribution/sort center. By UPS, DHL or another trucking company. It then is sent thru the post office system. It can add a week to 10 days on the actual shipping time.

This new way of shipping only benefits the shipper not the customer! I have quite ordering from wood craft since before this way of shipping it would be overnight from their warehouse in Ohio to my house in Michigan. Now it takes up to 7/10 10 days might as well order it at the brick and mortar store as it gets here faster!

I have been told that some only have the trailer or pick up once a week. To save costs, so it will be slow. then if the Posties have a computer problem or some other glitch it will add time.

My local post office said the Philadelphia sort facilities has problems with the automated sorting equipment. Since it took 3 weeks for a package to get from PSI to Michigan. The replacement order got here first!

Amazons sellers are using it, HF and most of the higher volume shippers. Welcome to the new world order of cheap shipping!
:clown:

We tend to think along these lines:
Have cheap items, ship it to me cheaply, maintain a huge inventory at your warehouse so it's always in stock...and I want it tomorrow...

We have very high expectations - untenable ones, I think...

Discount large-volume suppliers need to cut costs - the easiest way is via shipping costs. I think it's fairly common knowledge that PSI takes a while to ship.

PSI is using UPS mail innovations. The package is processed through UPS and picked up by them. UPS will take the package part way and then hand off to USPS who completes the delivery. We looked into using this for our hardware company and quickly changed our minds after seeing how this worked and reading some feed back by others. Yes it saves a lot of money and keeps shipping down, it does not however get to the customer quickly. We were told on average 9 business days.

I placed my most recent order to PSI on a Tuesday, paid a couple of dollars for expedited shipping. Received it on Friday, same week. I was very pleased.

I have just come to expect the delay. If I need something fast, I order elsewhere. If it's just something I need without any time constraints I'll use PSI.

It's like Murphy's law tho. If i don't need it immediately, it arrives in 2 days. If it's something that suddenly becomes important, it's a given that I'll see it in 10 days.

I have to chuckle in general when I hear about shipping woes......try shipping 3-400 pounds of bone and antler from a native Alaskan village some time! I ended up taking it on in the frieghter canoe with me....easier and cheaper.

If I order from PSI it costs 3 times as much and take 10 days longer than putting it in a priority box! If you work that out by pound it's about the same as shipping out of Nuiqsut.......75 miles from the end of the summer trucking route up the ice road! And it still takes longer!

I think it costs an extra $2.00 to get a rush shipment from PSI - I usually pay that and get my stuff in 3-4 days max

Three times I've done that... the 1st 2, they dropped the ball and did not ship the same day (or even the next), and then said they had even though UPS tracking showed otherwise. Took a complaint to the BBB to get the $2.45 each (it went up - it used to be $2) back. Those "rush" orders took 9 days from order to arrival.

This last time, I didn't get a shipping notice so 3 days later I emailed the customer service manager contact I had. It had shipped, just never got the notice, and the online order tracking knows nothing about it.

Not if they hold a "rush" which they claim "ships same day if ordered before 12:30" for a couple days.

PSI will ship Priority Mail... if you pay more for it.

I'm wanting one of the rubber coated vise grips for pen disassembly. Here's my shipping options:

Economy Ground ($5.00) 4-10 business days delivery
Ground Shipping ($8.50) 3-8 business days delivery
U.S.P.S. Priority Mail® ($8.65) 3-8 business days delivery
Ground Shipping - Rush Processing ($10.95) 2-5 biz day delivery
UPS 3 Day Select ($22.31) 3 business days delivery
UPS 2nd Day Air ($28.44) 2 business days delivery
UPS Next Day Air Saver ($54.71) 1 business day delivery

Every order I've placed gets delivered on the upper end of their estimates at best.

Why not order from woodturningz.com? They have those too.

I'm really not trying to be unreasonable. I know in reality a week is not that long. The fact is, I get stuff from much farther away much quicker. Simple fact. I am spoiled by the other vendors I use such as Beartoothwoods, Exotic Blanks & Arizona Silhouette who go above and beyond and get me my orders quick. They have great customer service and make you feel like you are a valued customer, which I appreciate!

...and yes I do realize that I am fortunate enough to live where my orders generally make it to me quickly, where as others live in remote areas and are forced to wait long periods for everything they order.

I think most of my frustrations stem from dealing with Penn State. Hence why I only order from them a couple of times a year.

I don't understand why people have so much trouble with PSI... I ordered two side scrapers on 10/02 and chose the cheapest shipping possible, not in any hurry for the tools, just needed to add them to my tool rack... they arrived via Atlanta, which is 3 hours south of me, on Tuesday, 10/09.... granted it took 7 days, but the projected delivery was 10/12 and I got them on 10/09.... at the cheapest shipping rate available.

Not if I judge by the driver that drives past my house... I'm 6 miles from town and I suspect he's in town before the dust settles in front of my house.:biggrin:

I don't have a problem with the fact that it's a week in shipping (though that's pretty slow by today's standards IMHO), but when you place "rush" orders that they promise to get out the same day and then doesn't ship for 2 days, that's a problem!

And I'll admit I am spoiled... mainly thanks to Amazon (2 day air no extra charge as I have prime - overnight $5), Newegg (next day or 2nd day via UPS ground 90+% of the time), and lately Exotic Blanks (2 days! $7), CSUSA (2 days $7), and Timberbits (3 days $5AUD)!! PA to LA should not take 2-3 times longer than Australia to LA. Especially considering all of these vendors get it here faster and cheaper (PSI $10.95 for "rush" ground = 1 week).

Why not?? it takes 2 weeks to get stuff from Seattle to Vancouver B.C. and that's on a good month.
