In the wake of an abysmal showing by the Cowboys last week (and uninspired play for a good time longer than that), I'm reminded of something that I once heard regarding sports and sports fans:

Being a fan of any sport or team is the only thing in life that can make you feel the same emotions whether you're 7, 47, or 77. It will make you laugh, cry, shout, curse, and laugh. Often all in a single game, always within a single season. You can follow and root for several teams, but you can only have one team in each given sport that can be YOUR team. And once you have declared allegiance to them, you have taken on a great responsibility. You can not take it back or change it. It is a lifetime appointment - like the Supreme Court.

But with the responsibility comes several rights. You are allowed to refer to them as if they were friends and family. You can share the prestige when "WE won!" and still remain aloof when THEY do something wrong. You can yell and curse, or laugh and cheer while jumping around like a fool and be given a free pass for it because you're a fan. You have the right to confidently feel that in all matters you know more than any of the players and coaches and publicly voice your opinions about them - whether in agreement or in contrast to their most recent performance.

You have signed on for a commitment that GUARANTEES that the majority of seasons will end in disappointment. You have jumped into a system where there are people who have lived their entire life without seeing their team win a championship.

But you'll always be back for the next game and the next season. Partially because of the responsibility. Partially because the excitement and the emotion outweigh the disappointment. Partially because the POSSIBILITY of what will happen next is infinitely more interesting that what happened before. But mostly because you're just a little bit twisted and you love it and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Cowboys have a bye week this week. So I'll leave the blue jersey on the hanger while watching the MLB postseason wearing red and cheering on my Cardinals (yeah, I know. Living in Texas, I'm probably opening myself up for some shots there as well). But the following week, I'll be in my blue jersey cheering and yelling at the TV again.

=)

I need to clarify my "Like". I like the overal gist of what you say, Jason. Most any fan of any team would. It's just one of those things. Especially being a Cowboys fan. And I have been all my life. But I also took on the Texans from day 1 and have stayed with them too. "You can't do that!", say some. "Having 2 favorite teams in the same sport just isn't done.", say others. Who says? I have several favorite college teams, each for different reasons.

But the Cardinals? Okay, you knew it was coming. I still love "My" Rangers!

Yep. I figured I've got some bruises coming for both the Cowboys and the Cardinals stances. =)

Bill - If the 'Boys played the Texans.....who would you be rooting for?

I almost agree totally with what you say, but I really think there are 2 exceptions where you are allowed to change favorite team. I am a Giants fan living in south east Virginia. Eventhough I would pull for a team that came to Suffolk VA (except the Cowboys, Eagles, Pats, or Packers), my #1 team would still be the Giants. NOW if one of my daughters became associated with a team, I would jump ship. I will not have a son so my thoughts of having a NFL playing son is gone.

Basically 2 reasons to change team.

1. A family member/friend playing for a team.
2. A team moves/starts real close to you.

As a life long Raider fan...we hear it all, cheers, jeers, the odd beer can tossed at our heads in disgust. I could handle any & all of it...until I met my wife 19 years ago...a dedicated patriot fan. Being the man of the house, I always get the last word...and that word is "Yes Dear"...until it comes to Sunday. She watches in the bedroom and I get to scream at the big tv. Oakland has a bye this week so I'm stuck watching cheater central in the living room.

That's a tough one, Jason. I have actually asked myself the same question. I think it would depend on the season. This season, for example, I would probably have to stay with the Texans. My biggest problem with the "Boys is their owner. I still haven't forgiven Tex for selling to an Arkansasian (or whatever they call themselves)! But that's my personal prejudice. And I'm allowed because we come from Arkansas. Still have distant family there, in fact.

Actually, Jones being from Arkansas isn't really an issue. The fact that he is an idiot is the issue. He needs to hire a GM, keep his arse in the sky box where he belongs and let his coaches coach.

Love it. My Brother in Law is a big Cowboy fan and I loved texting him Monday night at his sports bar. First Int. Oops! 2nd Int. Dad gum it. 3rd Int. Ah S*** 4th Int. WTF? 5th Int. Ben I will pray for you. his reply what can I say, time for another Crown on the Rocks. I am a Niner fan so we have had great fun over the years when they play each other. But really Monday night game, can't stand Jerry Jones. Can't feel sorry for Romo either, he is making the big bucks.

I tend to also be loyal to certain players, thus their team... I'm a fan of Peyton Manning and since he played for the Colts, I was a Colts fan.... Now he's a Bronco and so I like the Broncos....mostly though because I like watching Peyton play.... I liked Brett Favre and the Packers, until his last two years of play... I think he kinda lost it and should have retired from the Packers.... 'coarse as a former Houstonian now living in Tennessee I root for both the Texans and the Oilers(Titans)....

Oh I'm so confused... I don't know who I root for.:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Ya know what --- if people paid as much attention to what the politicians in this country do as they do to their favorite sports team, we probably wouldn't have nearly the problems we have.

I pay plenty of attention to that to. And like the sports, they make me cry, yell, and curse at the tv as well. ;)

As do I. The problem is that they ARE politicians. Worthless 2-bits if ever I saw one. Especially if they were lawyers first! Now a good, honest business man later turned to politics to try and make a difference? That's my guy (or gal). Trouble is, those kind don't hardly exist any more.

Just making an observation not looking to spark a discussion. I am amazed at how much information about the NFL "joe/jane six-pack" will have in his/her head and how many opinions he/she will have about what teams have to do, who they should trade for, what they need to do to make the playoff's and how their fantasy team is doing on any Sunday even while the real games are still being played. If they have a high-school kid they'll be loaded up with a ton of information about that too.....

No worries, Smitty. It's a valid comment and and interesting one, as well. =)

Like you, I'll be careful not to hijack this into a political conversation. But I think there are a number of reasons joe six-pack knows more about sports than politics. I personally believe much of it stems from a feeling of general mistrust, frustration, and lack of belief in the system regardless of whether one participates or not. Though the feeling of helplessness may be unfounded, it's pervasive and very persuasive.
