Turned black

Yesterday I "Turned Between Centers" for the first time. Wow what a difference in control I had (also moved Tool Rest Bar much closer).

Will be hard to go back.

One of the materials I turned yesterday was Mango...........Looked great until I wet it with my finger (and Saliva) to see the grain.........
It turned totally black right away............What happened? First time playing with Mango.

Dave, I've turned Mango, but have not experienced that issue... never wet the blank either though, so I'm afraid I'm not of much help here.

Actually seeing the Dr tomorrow, however I don't think Mango Wood and fluid reactions knowledge is taught in medical school.

Dave; Mango (Magifera indica) is found in Tropical Asia and Oceania. Most of the time Mango will always get considerably darker when any type of moisture or finish is applied to it. It's just the nature of the wood. Jim S

I have not had that problem with Mango and have turned a lot of it. I use DNA (denatured alcohol) to wet the blanks (no residue). Did you get any metal or sanding dust from the bushings on the wood?

Ah Ha.........Brand new bushing........bushing started BLACK........was not black when I finished. Thank you DR.
