I recently bought an ipad3 which came loaded with icloud software. I think I have an understanding of how it works but am having problems.

  • I set up my account on the ipad
  • I installed the necessary icloud software on my Gateway desktop PC
  • I then configured icloud on my PC showing it which directory to put my downloads and uploads into
  • All of the photos in my ipad are automatically moved to my "Photo Stream" folder
  • Both computers are hooked up to the internet
  • I launch the icloud application on the PC but nothing happens
From what I can read, that is all I need to do and the computer sees the photos in my photo stream and populates my cloud as well as any other devices with the icloud software turned on.

What am I missing? Is there something I'm missing to get my photo stream flowing?

I may be paranoid but I personally wouldn't put anything of mine in the Cloud be it pictures, music and especially personal data. I read all the time of supersecured sites getting hacked.

Maybe I'm the one who's confused, since I don't have an iPad. I just assumed you'd hook it up with the same cable I use to hook my iPhone to my computer. IN on the phone, OUT on the PC. The same cable I use to sync apps and music is used to download my photos from my phone.
Having to go through the internet to send my pictures to a far away computer where it can be hacked or lost only to have it come back through the same internet to a computer sitting next to me seems like it's complicating things.

"The Cloud" is a new-fangled way of saying "somebody else's computer", and I stay away from it too.
So tell me then, how is one able to easily move photos from their ipad to their PC?

With a USB cable.

So much for believing salespeople!

When I bought my ipad3, one of my concerns was the ability to move some of the smashing photos the ipad could take, over to my PC. I was told the only way to go was to use the icloud and based on the conversation, I understood that to mean the ONLY way.

I just spent two days looking through apple, ipad and icloud sights and never saw one mention of using a USB port to transfer data to a PC. Evidently that task isn't real high on most ipad owners lists.

Thanks, the photos were just transferred and now I have no need for the cloud!

Benton, I think I'm the one who's confused.
You're right, I believe. Upload 'em to iTunes.
(I rarely use Windows, and don't have a Mac -- iTunes just slipped my mind.)

I'm an old nerd, and I try to stick to the old ways.
I'm such a crusty old nerd that I feel like using windows soils me somehow.

It'd be nice if the iPad acted like a storage device when plugged in via usb. You know... like everything else that plugs in via usb? Nope, too simple. Let's invent a convoluted way to make things simple.

Clouds are magic, they do stuff in magical and mysterious ways, a cloud will fix what ever problems you have........

if you believe that I have a bridge you need to buy.

Cloud is just a name some sales person sitting someplace made up.

Its still storage on someones network some place a SAN (Storage Area Network) device which is just a bunch of hard drives connected together to create terabytes and terabytes of storage space connected to a network, connected to the internet.

Next we will be putting our clouds on the Sky, then the Sky onto Space.
:laugh::laugh:

The easiest way is to connect to Itunes with your Ipad through your PC like you did when you set up your Ipad originally. When Itunes finds your Ipad, it will first of all do a backup of your pad and then will since your apps, music, pictures, movies, etc.

Once your Ipad pops up in the Itunes click on it's icon and you will see all of that activity going on. After the sync is completed, then click on your picture file in the sync area and there you will find various options to upload and download between your pad and your pc. Check the options you want, then go down to the lower right hand corner of the screen and hit the sync button. Then Itunes will resync your Ipad with your PC with your new parameters.

Now is this the easiest way to do it? Nope, the cloud is, but this is the safest way to do it even though Itunes is a piece of crap software.

Also there is an adaptor you can buy that will attach to your Ipad which will allow you to hook directly to your camera. I have one but have never taken it out of the box. I will take a look at it tonight after I get back home and tell you more about it.

Hope that helps and makes sense!

I also like DropBox, but I've been seeing some quips on some of the security issues they are having lately. Nothing drastic and I still have confidence in the service, but I definitely not going to store any type of critical or personal files on it.
