A common enough question on the forums seems to be, "where can I buy _____?"

Do we have a table/chart/index/whatever anywhere on the forums that answers this question? I'm talking about essentially a vendor directory by product. All the vendor "directory" areas I've been able to find, you have to sift through yourself to find the vendors that sell what you're looking for.

No, I mean the opposite. That's a list of vendors, telling you what things each sells. I want a list of things, telling you what vendors sell them.

For example, if I want to buy a fleebleblotchit, I'd have to look at all the listings in that forum. "Search" can help, but misses any that don't include fleebleblotchits in plain text (e.g., if they link to a web page or include info in photos).

I just tried searching that forum for "wood burl blanks", and only got one hit - but I know for a fact that several vendors in that list sell wood burl blanks.

Also, searching for TBC bushings failed to turn up a main supplier of TBC bushings, because he's not in that list.

Hey Matthew!!

While I NEVER say NEVER, you are describing quite a task. CSUSA is said to have 11000 products. You would need a proficient database guy and several people to input, I would think.

Once the structure is there, then invite the vendors to "put an x" next to every product they can supply.

Now, I never (there's the word) have said I am computer proficient. So, I would start by running your idea past those who ARE and see if there is an EASY way to create such an index.

"If you build it, they (vendors) will come".

To clarify, I don't mean a listing by precise item, more like categories to some appropriate level of detail. Just what "appropriate level of detail" means is open to debate, of course. But I'm thinking not really more data than we already have, just organized to help people find the things they are looking for.

If we don't have such a thing yet, I'd be happy to be responsible for creating and maintaining it.

At a glance, there does not appear to be any vendor information on the Wiki. Although I haven't found a "rule" about that, I get the impression it would be unwelcome...?

Good Luck with that....

The database would be the easiest part of this project and this very thread topic is something that I mentioned in my [rant] post last night.
