what are they made from?

Have bought and used them, but have no clue what they're made from.

the alternate series of blanks from exotics. are those PR?

the color explosion blanks from bear tooth woods? acrylic or alumilite?


any other blanks you can think of that aren't what you might think?

Don't know exactly what they are, but they are NOT polyresin. You can't duplicate them (characteristics) in your kitchen.:biggrin::biggrin:
 
Turn known blanks of each back to back and note the differences in smell . They are all different . There will be small differences between different acrylics , but you can usually tell one from a PR . Also small differences between PR`s , but most here use the same resin .
 
Can't say for sure what the Altnernates are but to me they turn somewhere between PR and Inlace.

The color explosions I want to say were made by El Mostro (Eugene) and are made of alumilite. I haven't turned one before, but I know that's what his typical casting medium is.
 
The alternatives have been available for much longer than any of the "kitchen resins". Inlace Acrylester came on the scene early in the polyester rage, but still long after Alternatives. Now there ARE some polyresins being made commercially (RhinoPlastic and a couple others), but that is a newer process.
 
I've turned rhinos - and there's a good deal of variety there as far as brittleness goes. Some feel like acrylic - some like PR.
 
I have turned several color explosions and they turn like butter. I don't know if they are aluminite but they are similar. Wild colors!!
