I'm totally gutted. In the past 3 months I've had to lodge 3 separate Paypal disputes with companies for non delivery after receiving my funds. And with each one being several hundred dollars the amounts aren't trivial. The latest is with Drillsandcutter dot com. It's been a month since paying for my order and I've tried phoning, emailing, and online contact forms but no response.

And if I'm not filing disputes with companies I'm having to call to remind them of my order that they forgot about, or misplaced or some other excuse. Has this become the norm in the US? Is Japan the last bastion of quality service? It sure seems that way!!

My rant does not include the fine vendors here at the IAP. Thank goodness for you guys.

Unfortunately many of the on-line "stores" (Notice the quotes?) are drop shippers. They take your order and then turn the order over to another company / organization to package and ship. Unfortunately when you don't get the order, it may not be the fault of the place you ordered from, but rather their packager / shipper.

The largest of these is of course Amazon.

Chris,

I agree with what Randy wrote. I too have gotten into that. I look for a physical address now and often call and see if I can talk to a person. If I can't get a real person, I don't order. Actually, I did this before I left Japan.

STRONG RECOMMENDATION - Google the "company name" plus "complaints" ("Company XYZ complaints") before you order. When the complaints contain several with the same problem and complaints to the Better Business Bureau, I stay away. Usually, for a bad company, there will be more than one link that lists complaints.

That said, there is always someone that is going to complain about something, so I don't put stock when there is only two or three different complaints on a company that has been in business for several years.

You know when the local bread store outlet now checks $5.00 bills with the counterfeit pen, with the party standing infront of them things in the economy aren't like the talking heads on TV and in the government are telling us it getting better.
From what I understand, with the slow response that flea bay and paypal goes after the bad seeds. The bad guys know it may be a safe bet to open up a store for a while collect the money and move to a new PO box. With the web and the lack of enforcement, and consequences for ripping people off. The web is an easy place to rip people off!
It is a sad time in our history!

Besides the guy that started paypal, rocket just took off to the space station. Why would he care if you got ripped for a couple of hundred he all ready got his cut!

No, it is not the norm in the US. But, it probably looks that way when you find several of the bad apples in a row.

Sometimes you are dealing with people who don't want to be bothered to ship overseas because it's new and they might have to go to the Post Office and learn something that doesn't come out of a beer can, cigarette pack, or fast food lane. But they don't want to return your money either! Go figure!!! (Please notice tongue in cheek!)

Over the years of being in the fraud investigation business I learned to ALWAYS look for a websites "CONTACT US" tab, or, for the website to plainly advertise their address and contact telephone numbers.

IF none of these items were present I moved away immediately. If they had an advertised number I would call just to see who or what answered as Hank Lee states he does.

So far my methods of always checking first has paid off with me having no problems.

I ordered from drillsandcutters and got my pack in less than a week with a note on the invoice saying thank you. It's not a huge deal, but a detail that I appreciate. I think they'll do you right.

Thank you all for chiming in. Their site does have an address and phone number and if you call you are directed to voice mail and they say they prefer to correspond by email. I did my due diligence.

Three weeks after my order I sent a brief email asking the status of my order....(while staring at my VISA billing sheet) the response was...."What order?" And then nothing after that for two weeks despite my persistent efforts. My whole point is WHY do I have to go through all that??

Perhaps I was over-reacting but the circumstances were all so similar to the other claims I recently went through.
