I get very frustrated when the need to replace a tail stock screw comes about. The web site is NOT CONSUMER FRIENDLY and I was not able to order the part. I know others have been able to order the part, what is your secret?

How in the HECK did you figure that out? Even with your excellent instructions, I had to watch my step. This is the forth tail stock screw ordered and i go through this every time. You think I;d learn. Or better yet, you think they'd create a improved consumer friendly site.
Thank you for your help.

Call Jet... if the part is still under warranty, they'll send you one... I've gone through 3 on my little Jet and each time Jet has sent a new one at no cost to me... I ruined them drilling pepper mills :frown:- which I don't recommend on that small of a lathe.

Out of curosity does the screw wear out that much?

It seems to me that there shouldn't be that much wear on it. What is the screw made out of?

The reason for the screw wearing out so often is that the lathe takes the place of a drill press. I drill allot of antler which can be hard and tries the screw action. The metal could be a little stronger, but less than the head stock, but alas and alack, metallurgy is over my head.
My frustration is with myself for not remembering that this issue was the same as the last time; difficulty in ordering. This time I ordered TWO.

Who knows, maybe the last time I ordered two but do not know where I hid the last one.

I am sure that my little buddy is out of warranty, but I may call them just to see what they do.

John - Just out of curiosity, do you ever sharpen your drill bits? If you don't, consider getting something like a drill doctor. A sharp drill bit makes a huge difference.

My dear Ed. Thanks for being so brave as to suggest my tools aren't sharp. At my age, it is other things that aren't sharp - thinking being one of them. I sharpen my chisels with every new turning. I am not the best at sharpening, but can tell the difference in how it cuts. I use the diamond fine and medium files.
Thank you for your observation and helpful comments.

I only had to replace mine twice, then I got it through my head that the screw is not high quality steel so I don't put so much pressure on the tailstock.

Barry: That is the correct answer. It is not meant, I believe, for drilling. Just more accurate and need to push lightly.

John

John:

When you assemble it, try using some Never Seez, on the screw; It's a high pressure lube, I've used it a lot for when we did assemblies for the Military, it's what they spec out for a lot of their assemblies.

It's a lot better then regular grease, I have a big can I use for everything. But be for warned, it's messy.

I asked once before if it should be lubricated. I put a couple drops of three n one oil on the screw. Never Seez, never sees daylight?

Problem I found is the quill screw is a relatively soft steel and the keeper E ring is much harder and the pressure of drilling causes the keeper E ring to cut and score the quill screw... cuts the threads right of that sucker.:biggrin:

If it's under 5 years old, it should still be in warranty... I found the guys at Jet to be easy to work with and pretty nice guys...

YMMV.....

Hi John - Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I've just been surprised over the years at how many really good woodturners I know who keep a razor edge on all their turning tools and then never think to sharpen their drill bits. Go figure.

Ed: I had to have some fun at your expense. I was, just yesterday, telling my wife how much of an insult it was to tell a wood worker his tools weren't sharp. After my postings it only made sense that you would suggest that as a helpful comment; not knowing what Mary and I had just talked about. It is ME that owes YOU an apology. I thank you for your bravery.
You are right about the drill bits, they are always over looked.
Please keep in touch,

John
