What is the best finish for a tool handle? I recently turned a handle for my carbide tool and was contemplating what to use, I figured I couldn't go wrong with polyurethane...

All help is greatly appreciated

I just used a couple coats of friction polish and some wax on mine. Like you said though, can't go wrong with poly. I was to impatient to wait for a finish to dry on mine.

I was considering doing that also. How has it held up? How long have you been using it?

We do ours with Lacquer Sanding Sealer, sand it again then 7 or 8 coats of Wipe On Poly, but we do 10 or 12 at a time. and the wait time between coats is about 15 or 20 minutes.
Deft Spray Lacquer is also a good reasonably durable material, and it's fast, but it costs us too much, I wish I had a good drying cabinet, I'd get an HVLP gun and shoot the handles with Precat Lacquer.

I went with a simple shellac finish the last time I made a tool handle. I really did not want some super shiny handle that might be slippery.

I like smooth but tactile handles. I don't sand beyond 320 or 400 depending on what wood I use. I finish with at least two or three coats of danish oil or tung oil.

I used a minwax spray lacquer on mine. Can't remember how many coats, probably between 3 and 6 and it has held up wonderfully... tool handle is bocote.
