Anyone ever heard of Alan Lacer?...

I had the pleasure of having Alan Lacer in my shop this evening for the past 3 hours. Instead of him giving a demo or doing the teaching, it was me teaching him about stabilizing!

Alan and his wife Mary were vendors at SWAT last year and their booth was right next to mine. I got to know them fairly well and traded Alan some of my stabilizing resin and a few pen blanks for one of his bowl gouges.

He e-mailed me a week ago asking some questions and said he was going to be in the area doing some 3 days classes and hinted that he would like to come by for some help with his stabilizing. Of course I offered and this evening, him and one of the members from the Austin turning club came down and spent the last 3 hours learning about stabilizing. It was a real honor for him to ask and allow me to teach him something!

From what I've read and heard about Alan, he's a great guy -- and a master with the skew. I'd like to get a copy of his DVD, "Shopmade Woodturning Tools and Jigs". I'm at the juncture where I'd like to make my own turning tools for turning miniature hollow forms.

Curtis, I think you're both fortunate!
 
If you want to know anything about how to use a skew take look at his DVD's. It'll make you SIK! Very good videos!

Curtis are you honestly saying you spen three hours with Alan and you still can't use a skew? :tongue:

To cool. That is something to remember.
 
I seen him a few weeks ago do a demo and he was great.A super nice guy that was a great teacher.He mentioned your stabilizing juice,and how a guy in Texas sells it.A real nice guy.Congrats,Victor
 
Curtis, sounds like a "meeting of the minds!". You had a real treat - and so did Alan.

Alan is going to provide the Demo at the San Antonio Alamo Woodturners (AWA) meeting this Thur nite and I'm looking forward to it. As program coordinator I've had the enjoyment of talking with him to set up the visit.

Name dropper! Oh yeah? Well he spent the night at my house once. Alan caused a bit of a stir when he came to Peoria. He put on a demo for our club at our regular meeting place at Woodcraft. He then started selling his signature tools out of his truck in the parking lot. At the end of the day, he mentioned to the Woodcraft owner that if they wanted to stock his tools in the future, they already have Woodcraft bar codes on them. The owner got pretty mad about that. He didn't charge us for the meeting place, and didn't make a share of the tools sold in his parking lot. And believe me, there were a lot of tools sold that day.
 
Our local Woodcraft invites Alan Lacer here for demo/classes several times...one of the best classes I have taken, he is a great teacher..

Curtis, dang..!!..didn't realize you were in SanMarcos..!!..we were just there last week with my daugher visiting TexasState...would have loved to meet up with you if you were available...gotta order more juice..!!
 
I wish I had know Alan was making a tour of Texas clubs (other than Houston) - would be nice to have taken one of those classes.

might be short notice to schedule a visit - but I'll mention it on our GCWA forum and see if they can set it up!
