so i am slowly getting into custom pens and my dad's friend made me one from elk horn and a 308 cartridge. i figured if he can make them i could make one from my next buck kill so heres the issue. the pen that was given to me, its a twist pen and the actual mechanism to twist the cartridge in and out just doesn't seem very stiff and while writing the cartridge ALWAYS ends up closing up. how can i fix this?

The transmission should be able to be replaced unless something odd was done to it. Pics would make a clearer picture of what to tell you.

When we ask for a pic, it really means a pic of the transmission, if you can.

There are dozens of ways to make casing pens, can't tell you how to fix it until we know what pieces were used to make it.

Welcome to IAP!!!

literally just went and snapped these so be nice please but hey this is just the overall pen I'm trying to use an iPhone and to be honest from the hours of research i did I'm pretty sure nothing is wrong with the transmission but is there a transmission that basically snaps into place that i could replace it with?

One thing I have found the most cause of this is that the transmission is not fully extending. This has to happen to lock it in place, if not it will retract as soon as you put pressure on it. JMTCW. By the looks of your pictures it is just a slim line transmission and can be replaced very easily.

you have to knock out the nib. You can use a small transfer punch and once the nib is off you knock out the transmission from the nib end. Hold the pen bottom in your hand and wrap it in a piece of cloth or rubberized material to keep it from slipping. Use a transfer punch that fits inside the tube and hit it with a mallet or hammer and the transmission will come out. Replace the nib and then replace it with a 7mm transmission and press it in slowly so that it doesn't extend too far. It isn't too difficult. Just follow the steps and don't rush it.

Will get a picture for y'all in the morning. The tip definitely May not be coming out enough. I just want to get it working properly since there is nothing worse than racing to write before the tip disappears

You have had some good advice. My guess is the same as some. I'll bet that the transmission was pressed in to far.

Try this: Unscrew the refill about one revolution. Now try the twist as you would with the top on. If it works correct, your trans was pushed in to far when installed. If this is the case, you can do as suggested and knock out the nib and then knock out the tranny. If all comes out well, what I do, when installing trans in a 308, is this.
First you have to have the nib back on the casing.
Second, screw the refill into the trans and extend the refill as you would in the writing position, hold it up to the casing, and see how far you need to press in the trans. Now remove the refill and press in the trans just short of your mark and test. You should be short. Now just sneak up to where you need to be. I will bet that you will not press in the trans as far as you would normally go on a normal size tube because your 308 is just a bit shorter than the normal 7mm tube.

One problem you may run into. When you knock out your trans you may inadvertently knock out the tube as well. There is a good chance you will wreck your trans as well.

If you do have a problem, I can send you a nickle plated 308 with the trans installed and a copper nib just because, so don't sweat it to much.

Let us know how it works out for you.

I simply screwed the cartridge a bit and it worked perfectly. Id love for it to have a transmission that vet distinctly and firmly locks into place but my pen is doing great now

Hi Trevor -- I see you joined today. Welcome.

I don't know if you have any pen assesmbly experience yet or not, but you may need some more information to make sense out of what everyone has been telling you. I'd suggest to start with the library articles, videos on Youtube, and even some of the instruction sheets that the suppliers provide with their "slimline" line of pens. Here's a "Penturning 101" section of the library that is a good starting place: http://www.penturners.org/forum/f139/iap-library-penturning-101-start-here-90772/

If I misunderstood your experience level, here's a library article that helps explain one way to take the "guts" of the pen apart.

http://content.penturners.org/library/tools_and_jigs/A_SIMPLE_7MM_DISASSEMBLY_TOOL.pdf

I'm sure there are several Youtube videos showing the same procedure. I can't search Youtube from work, but try searching for "disassemble slimline pen" or something similar.

If you ruin the existing transmission trying to knock it out, here's one source:

Pen Parts | Page 1 of 1

just scroll down the page and look for the 7mm Twist Mechanisms.

another option is to buy a "slimline" pen kit from any of the various suppliers, and only use the transmission out of one of them. A little pricier, but if you have a local store, it might be less expensive than paying shipping.

After you knock out the nib, then the transmission, press the nib back in place, then press the transmission back in (or new transmission) slowly - test fit with the ink refill - press in "just a hair more" - test fit with the ink refill -- press in "just a half-a-hair more" -- test fit with ink refill........

There is alot to learn if you are new at this, so I'd spend some more time reading articles before knocking your pen apart. Another idea would be to talk to your dad's friend, and see if he can give you some instruction time. He might even have the right tools to help you adjust this pen.

There's lots of help out there, and depending on where in Louisiana you are, there's probably some fairly local help not far away.

Good luck.

John
