Well, how I don't know but it appears that I have a malware virus on my pc.

I did a google on Win 7 Home Security 2012 and it appears that it is making the rounds right now affecting some major sites. When I googled Win 7 Home Security 2012, from a non-infected laptop, one of the Google links took me to a site called TECH WATCH which recommended following certain steps to get ride of the malware which includes downloading and I think purchasing a program called Malwarebytes-Anti Malware.

I turned off the internet to the affected laptop and am using another machine right now. I don't mind buying software if it will work but at this point am a little leary of this whole thing, including the Tech Watch report, of being one huge scam!

I currently use a program called Ad Aware which was supposed to be pretty good but didn't catch this sucker, any thoughts or advice?

Do any of you PC gurus think the Tech Watch website is on the up and up and that their virus removal instructions are also on the up and up?

I had this one recently too. First thing I did was set my PC clock 8 days ahead and reboot twice. The virus is set to uninstall in 7 days. When I did it to made a less of my dll's so I ended up having to also do a system restore. After that I ran Malware Bytes and my Avast AV. Since then I have been meaning to drop the money on both and get real time coverage not just passive monitoring.

I've done battle with that one and similar rogue viruses (viri??) There are many websites that offer help and instructions on removal for free. It can be a challenge sometimes. Read through this one if you haven't already. If that doesn't help, just grab any 14 year old kid and ask...thats what I usually end up doing.

Go to microsoft.com. Search on malware removal. They will have steps to follow and links to free software. It has worked for me a couple times in the past. I trust the links Microsoft sends me to.

Try microsoft essentials for win 7
-Google it with infected machine.
-Download it from microsoft to desktop and run program
-install all the updates
-run a scan
-Microsoft essentials should find the malware and it will quarantine the virus then you remove it from quarantine..Done... and its free its the virus protection I run on all my machines.

In the past I had problems with viruses all the time I have kids using the computer and somehow they seem to find these problems. I have since purchased Kaspersky and have had no trouble since I would highly recommend it the cost is modest and the peace of mind is invaluable

Yep. What he said.

If this doesn't work, PM me. As long as you can get to the Internet, I can "coach" you as to how to let me connect remotely and fix it. Most of the "paid cures" are worse than the disease!

This is the reason I only use Ubuntu, a Linux based operating system. I don't know all the nuts and bolts type of stuff, but the system is very secure against this kind of thing. And it is free. I bought my last two computers without Windows and installed Ubuntu. When I did have an off the shelf machine with Windows installed I just installed Ubuntu and removed Windows. For over three years I have not had any virus or malware problems.

MS Security Essentials is free. As is Mal ware bytes. Download them to the unaffected pc. Run all updates. Scan unaffected pc. Then pull the hard drive out of the affected pc, install it in the unaffected pc as a 2nd drive. Not as the boot drive!
Boot the pc up and right click on the 2 nd drive and select scan drive with security essentials. Depending on the size of the drive it will take several hours. This is the only full proof way to remove a virus from an affected machine.

Repeat the step using malware bytes, this will remove the non viri installer files that SE left behind.

Installing the AV software after the infection doesn't always help. The virus has mean to hide it self If the boot drive is infected. Running the av software won't be able to remove it completely if it is running a root kit to mask its presence to the Av software. Scanning the hard drive from a different uninfected boot drive is the only sure fire way to remove a root kit.

i ha d the same problem last week with my pc i ended up taking to my computer guy and he had to restore it back to the way it came out of the box to fix it.

I haven't had a virus in years, but I've had good luck running a complete virus scan/removal, then restoring the computer to a time prior to the infection.

OK...so I kind of do this for a living (I am an uber geek in the Marine Corps comm community) and am embarrassed to say that one, my wife somehow managed to get this despite a vigorous AV posture and constant patching - and that two I had to rebuild her PC when she got it since I could NOT remove it.

So, my offer of assistance is not that great, but hopefully you can get by w/o a rebuild.

My wife was looking at houses and she got hit with a redirect for this but did nothing and we did not get it. I was able to get an ip but most likely it was a hacked unit also. The ip I have came from Turkey and the other somewhere in europe.
This is not a virus it is spyware and most AV are not equipped to handle it. if it pops up don't click just reboot or close the pages through task manager and you should be ok.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried several different things but it kept coming back and back and back over half a day of fooling with it so I finally just said to hell with it and reformatted the drives and reinstalled everything to where it was when I bought the laptop. To complicate matters we were in the midst of switching from one internet provider to the next and due to another foot of snow the new carrier installer didn't make it on time so I was without internet capabilities for three days.

Everything is up and running now, will just take some time to get everything tweaked the way I like it.
