I have acquired a burl slab that is about 2" thick. The owner said it was black walnut burl. I am currently cutting it into pen blank sizes. I should also tell you that I am new to this hobby, but have been a carpenter for 20 plus years. It is a really nice hunk of wood!!

Are the edge cuttings of value or interest to the "casting crowd"? If I post pics here are there folks who would trade for other nice stuff?

The patterning and eyes are absolutely amazing, and I have not yet cut the "best" part of the slab. let me know if there is any interest.

(the slab gives of a faint "urine" smell when you are cutting. Is that a characteristic of black walnut?)

I would be interested, if you can post some pics or send them to me through PM. I make PR blanks that I can trade.

If your cutting it for your own use then by all means cut it into pen blanks as you need to. If your looking to trade most of it, leave it in larger pieces for bowls or bottle stops or pepper mills. There is not a large market for walnut pen blanks but there is a better market for the other stuff.

Not unless someone has taken a leak on it....
Could have been some kind of nutrient in the ground that the tree was near and absorbed over the years. But that is wierd.

Scott (logs I cut don't smell like that) B

Burl Pictures

Here are some pictures. The first is 10 blanks. They are the nicest of what I have cut so far, and measure 3/4 x 3/4 x 5. I am asking $7.00 each plus postage (Postage is at cost. send me a pm with what you want and a zip for a quote.) I accept PayPal.

The second pic is another 10 blanks (same size). I have turned the "worst side" up, but the blemishes are mostly on the surface and should turn away if you are doing a slim pen. They are $5 each and $2.50 for the shorts, again plus postage.

The next two pics show the remaining hunk of burl. It is roughly 2" thick. A large section is not usable (the bottom of the last picture.) A 12" ruler is included in the pic for scale. I can cut it into custom chunks if you like. It should them fit in a large flat rate box.

I don't know what to ask for it. I was planning on making more blanks. Make me an offer if you are interested in purchasing it.

Last is a pic of the trimmings. $10 for the lot?

I hope this works!!!
