Okay. It's a newbie question. And I don't remember how to "search" so I'd apprexiate someones help.

I glued tubes in wood blank for pen with CA.

How long do I have to wait before I can turn ir? Does heat loosen the CA?

Thanks a bunch. I need to write this stuff down . . .

You're about to get a MILLION answers for this. I usually wait 5-10 minutes before hitting my blanks with the pen mill and turning. I use thick CA. PolyResin and acrylics usually take about 20 minutes to set up in my experience.

Which CA glue did you use? Most CA purchased from shops that cater to pen turners have a quick cure rate so a matter of minutes to cure and set. I use the Insta-Flex + from Penn State Industries (PSI). Skuff up the brass tube and pour it on thick and set it into the blank. From there the stuff sets almost instantly depending on the blank material. This stuff is rubber toughened and has anti-shear qualities so it absorbs the vibrations when turning. If you hit the CA with accelerator you can almost turn it directly after. As Allan noted above...Millions of answers...they will come in time.

Best wishes

Sue,
Allen is right... you only need to give the glue time to set and thick sets in about 10-20 minutes.... personally I glue the tubes in and set them aside until the next day... just my method and not THE method... Heat will break down the glue, but I think before you get hot enough for it to breakdown, you're going to burn your fingers, the sand paper, the blank and any finish you might have on the blank.... I've never had a glue failure from heat... a few where I didn't get enough glue, the hole was oversized and not enough contact between the tube and blank and a few other reasons we won't mention...

Now, I HAVE had to use heat to get a tube un-glued. Lit a candle from a birthday cake and heated the tube enough to break it loose. Took some time and careful work with pliers, but I've done it a few times.

So by the time I read the 50th response, I'll be able to turn it. Thank you all so much.
My finish the way I do it gets mighty hot.

How are you finishing it then? Perhaps we can help fine tune it, but then again your pens look pretty darn good...so?

I use thick CA for my smaller pens and I let it cure 24hrs before turning. That said, I usually prep anywhere from 10-20 pens at a time so it is easy for me to let it cure becasue by the time I am done I am tired of looking at them.

I also production prep blanks so I typically let them sit overnight (or over-work) before milling. Prior to doing this, I would occasionally spin out a tube while milling due to the glue not being fully cured.
