Hi,

My name is Keith and I am an addict.

I thought I had it under control but I was only fooling myself. It starts out with maple... the cheap stuff, then it wasn't doing the trick anymore so I moved up to maple burl.

Fast forward to 6 months later and I am using every burl known to man!... Amboyna, buckeye (stabilized and dyed of course), vasticola, thuya, redwood, red mallee, cherry... you get the point. Oh and lets not forget the "burls and swirls".

It seems like I always have at least 2 packages on their way in the mail.

It doesn't help that my girlfriend is an enabler :biggrin:

Hi Keith, Woodturning in general is a foul nasty addiction, I nearly drive off the road at least once a day looking at some tree or a downed one. Winter is horrible, the leaves aren't there to cover up burls and crotch pieces. I too started out on the gateway woods, now I have a shop with several tons of turning stock and close to a thousand blanks, Thank god I make my own tools, or I'd be in debt to my eye balls.
 
I haven't used (my lathe) since last night!

(Shop floor's been) nearly 24 hours clean!

I think I may need to call my sponsor 'cause the drill press is calling me: "Just drill a couple blanks... You don't need to turn them tonight... Just get them ready just in case."

I believe this is called denial! Keep coming back! : )

I went out yesterday and told myself I would just look at the lathe and then, before I knew it a switch had been flipped and I came in three hours later wondering what happened. And now there are pictures on this sight of what I did. ; )

If I keep messing pens up like I have been the last couple weeks, I may break free of this addiction. Out of my last 7 pens, 2 failed completely, 3 took about 3 attempts each to get the finish right and only 2 worked out without difficulties.

I just broke a beautiful red mallee burl with sapwood when pressing a kit piece into it by not having everything lined up straight enough.. The first time I've done that one. I hate when I waste my time like that. Things always seem to screw up at the end after investing a couple hours into the blank. :mad::mad::mad::mad:
 
:Not only turning is addicting but this web site is as well. I can't help but to check it every 15 - 30 mins. Got to get more or I go into shakes:beat-up:
 
I empathize with you Keith. With the holiday season approaching many of us will break down and give in to the temptation. Our families will be inside celebrating the holidays and we will be out there, in our garages, basements or tool sheds.....turning pens....all alone....just us and our ca, blo, alumelite and other diversions of choice.

Get to meeting Keith, now! Before you end up alone in your garage.
 
Actually I do not consider pen making an addiction. It is therapy for my wife. Keeps me out of the house and out of her hair.

Wait a minute, you mean there's something wrong with being alone in your garage? But I've got the cot, cat, camping stove and fridge to keep me company. What more is needed?
