Very Sad Day Last Week

My wife and I had to make the decision to have our wonderful pet, Lenny, a Dachshund, put to sleep last Wednesday. It was a tough decision to make but was best for him as he was suffering from diabetes. He had lost a third of his body weight (22 down to 14.5 pounds) in the last month. He was drinking 2 to 3 full bowls of water per day. Our only other option would have been to put him in the hospital at exorbitant cost for a treatment regimen that MIGHT work or not. It was a very sad day indeed. We buried him in our backyard. He would have been 12 years old in January.
Rest in peace my friend.:frown::crying::frown:

That was a very kind, caring, and loving thing you did for one of your dearest friends. Rest assured you showed more love to your pet by allowing them to go with self esteem.
 
Randy I'm sorry to hear that. My wife and I have had to do the same with two of our pets and it's not an easy thing to do but is best so the pet doesn't suffer. You and your wife did the right thing.
 
Randy, I know how it feels, even with 4 other dogs around to loose the ONE is hard, it's been almost 2 months and I still see her in all her old places, but knowing that you had a big enough heart to do the best thing for you friend!!
 
I've had to put a number of them down over the years and it is so hard. I have two 15 year olds now that are not far from that. Hope all the support offered here has given you some solice.

You will always have the memories. Not a more loyal or dedicated friend in the world than a truly good dog. Bless 'em all. Peace to you and your wife.
 
Glad someone else posted the Rainbow Bridge, I always try to pass that along to people who lose a pet- it helps me feel better. You have my sympathies. Being a diabetic myself, I can't imagine how sucky a pet must feel when you try to manage it for them and can't get feedback on how they're feeling and can't check their blood sugar regularly. It's not something I would want to put my pet through, because you can really feel awful, and you need to be able to have that feedback of testing and verbalizations if you're in the position of trying to manage it for someone else.

That was one of the things the vet brought up when we asked if he was in pain. His sugar was around 625 and she said anything with sugar levels like that was hurting. Kind of helped us along in our decision as we just couldn't stand to know how miserable he must have been feeling. :frown:

Everyone's very kind comments are very much appreciated. He was a good friend and will be sorely missed. If only people could have the uninhibited love and affection that these animals show to their human caretakers I believe the world would be a much better place. :embarrassed:
 
sorry for your loss

i feel greatly for you. last December we had to do the same thing for our golden retriever due to her tumor which was growing wildly. she just was not herself any more. When i first brought her home for Debra, (bought her from the back of a jeep in a wal-mart parking lot for $5.00) she would fit in my shirt pocket. We had her for >15 years. terrible pain. my wife has her ashes and has stated in her will to have her ashes scattered with hers over 3 specific place.
 
Lost my Cat last Moday.

I am sorry for you loss. I know how you are feeling. I had to rush my 3 yr old cat to the vet hospital last Monday evening 10/24/11. He had crawled out from under the livingroom chair and collasped. Found out that he was severly enemic. His kidneys and liver were shutting down. His breathing was getting really labored and while we were trying to decide how to help him, he went into cardiac arrest. We had to put him down then. :crying:

This all started because of fleas. Could not give him a bath. He put me in the hospital for a few hours last time we tried that. Seems hard to beleive but we could not get any help after that to get rid of the fleas. We tried 2 vet offices and 3 pet groomers.
 
I am sorry for your loss of your friend. I am glad that you were able to have 15 years with your friend. Your action was unselfish and loving for taking care that your dog did not suffer just to keep it around.
