I am ex-Navy myself but that date is a couple of years or so before the United States of America existed as a nation - even on paper. The Articles of Confederation were not adopted formally until 1781 but they were used defacto beginnging in 1777.

The 200th anniversary of the establishment of today's Department of the Navy is 30 April 1998.
The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established during the War of Independence by the Continental Congress on 13 October 1775, which date we observe as the Navy Birthday. After the War of Independence, the ships of the Continental Navy were sold off, and the seamen and officers let go. On 30 April 1798, Congress established the Department of the Navy. They did this in order to meet the need for an executive department responsible solely for, and staffed with persons expert in, naval affairs, on the eve of the commencement of armed hostilities with the naval forces of France, the conflict known as the Quasi-War.

The Continental congress did not represent the United States of America - they represented 13 separate colonies who were more or less joining together to oppose the British rule. From a standpoint of law, most of what they did was illegal - they got their authority from themselves mostly, or from a colony which had no legal standing to convey the authority.

Truth is had King George offered them a few seats in Parliment there might be no United States.

You and I recognize and honor George Washington as the 1st President of the United States of America - yet under the Articles of Confederation 8 men had held the title of President between 1781 and 1789.

I don't have any reason to oppose what the Navy claims as their date of birth except that it is difficult for the United States Navy to be Older than the United States....who already claim a birthday at least 5 years older than we really are.:redface: It was quite awhile ago at any rate.
 
Brings back a memory

I had a brother who spent 9 years in the US Army because the Navy wasn't accepting recruits when he decided to join. He graduated from high school in 1946 - about a year after WW II ended. In September of that year he decided to enlist - he went to the Navy and they were still drawing down from the war (it took time to decommission a lot of ships) and were not accepting recruits. So he joined the Army. Reenlisted in 1950 and got to Japan about a month before the Korean war started.
 
Happy Birthday to all the squids as well!!! Us jarheads like ya'll just fine. Everytime we need to go somewhere, you give us a ride!!
 
Now I have heard of everything. Squids and Jarheads are not on the same team?? I new there was something going on with y'all but wow. You both need each other like in marriage, it's like you live together. Now that I have stirred that up, think I will just stay on post with all the other Soldiers. Lol!! One team one fight. God Bless America!
 
I feel left out

I was a Tin Can sailor and we never took anybody but our crew anyplace (ok -- we took ComDesDiv 142 and his communicator). By the way, we considered Destroyers to be the only SHIP in the US Navy. Anything else was either a boat or a hotel.
 
Smutty, You just don't know how much fun I have with the Navy guys during our annual Retiree Appreciation Day here in North Alabama. They keep telling me the difference between a Ship and a Boat is a Ship can carry a Boat. With that said I don't think a a Destroyer can carry a boat so, it must be a Boat? I do know that some Sailors don't like them to be called Boats.

Sure its a team, like a family actually.... They are our big sister.

Annoying as hell, bossy all the time and most of the time you want to kill them.

Other then that, its just fine.

What they call a destroyer today can easily carry a boat they are 500 feet long and displace about 8000 tons - almost as big as a cruiser used to be.

That being said - Tin Cans are still the only SHIP...the rest are still either boats or hotels.

Air Craft Carriers carry super markets on them for cats sakes.... we had a coke machine as our 'civilian' treat provider.
 
I always envied you navy guys! Try driving/riding/shooting in a tank for two years! I'm still beat up from it. Of course, I hear the new tanks are smoother riding.

My brother was a Tank Driver in Korea --- he didn't think too much of it either.
 
Got to love us Military guys, we can talk sh#% to each other and still come together and have a beer or for the Air Force milk and have a good time. Thanks to all that have served I'm sure one of you have save my butt a couple of times. Would like to see a convention with all of us (all services) to sit down and talk. We have our Sergeant Major conference each year but it would not be the same with all ranks and services.
