difference

I was at Woodcraft today pricing abrasives. I went in looking for abralon as the prices on the net especially Wood N Whimsies where prices are bearable. Woodcraft had something called abernet which is 2 1/2 times higher.

I'm confused. Which abrasive is better? Is the high priced better?

Does anyone on IAP forum sell Abralon? I would rather just order it if I could.

I use the foam back micro mesh from woodnwhimies its 15 to 12,000 grit geit on both sides. They are about 3"x4' and this batch I cut in 1/2I made about 300 pens with my first set. mostly Corian

Abernet is an open weave sandpaper that doesnt clog easily. It last longer and cuts faster because it doesnt load up with dust. Aberlon I havent used although Im reading the description and it seems to be the same. WoodnWhimmsies carreis Abernet but I dont see where they carry Aberlon. I believe wolftat sells Abernet here on the IAP check the classified if that will help. I have the abernet for wood and it works as well as they say it does.

I only use Abranet and MM for finishing now. Abranet is truly remarkable stuff.

I love the Abranet espacially for acrylic.It can be used wet or dry but it works best wet.Thats why I don't use it on the wood pens.I don't like getting the wood wet.
It also lasts forever.just keep it clean.

I quit trying to figure out which sanding media to use several years ago and settled on Abranet and Abralon. Since that time it meets 100% of my sanding needs and I couldn't be happier with it. Abranet and Abralon are the same thing, made by the same company, the only difference that I can see is that one has foam backing, the other doesn't.

The Abranet/Abralon will outlast "regular" sandpaper as it doesn't load up and clog up with sanding residue and dust. For this reason I believe you get a smoother finish since when you grab an 800 grit pad, it's not gummed up with LARGER particles causing you not to get a true 800 grit sanding.

I only have the foam backed Abralon in two grits; 1000 and 2000 but rarely find the need for the 2000 on wood/CA or acrylic. Needless to say I have no need for micromesh in my shop whatsoever.

I've never seen Abralon for sale on the forum.

Abralon as George said is foam backed, and it great on bare wood, acrylci or CA. I have 360, 500, 1000 & 2000 grit. Its used a lot in car bodywork sanding and finishing, over here anyway!

Abranet is also a great abrasive just not with the foam back, but can be used with velcro if needed! Have that in 120, 240, 400 and 600!!

Would highly recommend either, worth the extra cash. They don't clog, can be washed out and you can split the abrasive like paper or cloth backed version!
