Home made spur drive for bottle stoppers?

Somebody here put up a link that showed a home made spur drive made from 3/8" mild steel rod. I've tried making it, but it isn't working for me. I did it from memory, but apparently I've forgotten something. Do you guys know what I'm talking about?

I made one for my collet chuck, I used a 3/8" steel rod from the hardware store. First I drilled a 1/4" hole 1/2" deep in the center, then cut 4 teeth on the remaining circle of metal. For the center I cut a 1/4" piece of steel rod 2" long, I chucked it up in my drill and using my belt sander I made a point on it. After I had my point, I cut it 1/2" to fit n the hole I drilled in the 3/8" rod.

The center point and the teeth on the outside keep the blank from spinning.

Will this still work once the tail stock is pulled away to do the top of the blank?
 
It won't work when you remove the tailstock. What I use use after I remove the tailstock is a tapered machinist mandrel, I got it from ENCO or McMaster Carr.

This is the prototype I made, it does not have the center point. I used a hacksaw and made 2 cuts, and then filed the teeth. I have no idea of where my photo is of the final version. But it gives and idea of how to make it.

I have made them using the rod and a chain saw file. File accross the end, forming an "x". Keep filing until the point are formed.

I made a few to make wistles.
