Wait till you get to Oak. I dont have much of a collection at all, I have given most of the pens I make away.

i have some oak and am aware of 25 species (but unsure which exactly is mine, which i need to find out somehow), i'm likely missing a few oak names

When I started, I turned a lot of different wood types. Then got a CD (they were new, at the time) with "all" the species and pictures, etc. This showed me two things:

1) There were WAY too many species to try to do them all and
2) Some were not very pretty, as pens.

So, instead I did a lot of really pretty woods, from around the world and carried cards describing the trees as I sold the pens. Many people learned about trees and cultures because of my pens---and so did I.

and about 129 species of maple!

I would love to have a wall full of pens! I would like to have a fine example of every type of burl I can get my hands on. That would be awesome!

do i dare not only do one of every species, but figure as well? :frown: where does the line get drawn?

I have two 96 pen cases that I keep full. If I sell some, I make more, I can't stand to open them up and see empty spaces.:wink:

only 2 cases? what if they want a little variety in their lives? you should find them a 3rd incase they want a threesome

About 15

I am starting to collect I have about 15 now and 4 coming. I am collecting pens turned by IAP members and I am about to enter the phase of deciding how to display them. I probably have about 30 or 40 that I made but they don't count unless I get good enough to turn one worthy, which I have not so far. I also need to solve the problem of how to mark them (or the display) so I can always find the name of the maker without damage to the pen or detracting from it's beauty.

One of my good buddies (from childhood) managed to get ahold of a penny candy case which he turned into a coffee table in his rec room. That would work great (if I could find a place for it) but they are hard to find and harder to afford if you do find one. His is made with really thick and strong plate glass.

build a table yourself, glass might be a bit pricey though
i just made a few chess boards with 6 different woods + glass (in same board)
rather large (3ft sq) not much difference from a table aside from no legs on it
tons of woodworking can look complex as hell, but is accually simpler steps
plenty of router bits can make the edges look fancy, a few nails and string to guide makes nice curvy edges

I'm not unfamiliar with building tables. I think, though, that to display the pens It wants to be more like an aquarium or terrarium where you don't have to look dowm to see the Pens.....They are a bit more difficult unless you're used to working with glass or plexiglas.
