Question about the die holder

The OD of the die is what you need to know. I have 1" dies and 1.5" dies. The die holder will only fit one size of die. That's not just one size of thread, because you can have 30 different 1" diameter dies, but a 1" diameter die does not fit in a 1.5 holder. Don't quote me on my die sizes either...come to think of it, maybe those 1" dies I have are 1.25" dies. Either way though, I have 2 die holders, 1 for all my smaller dies and one for the larger ones.

Thanks. That what I was looking for. I didn't know if all the OD's were the same or you custom made your own dies to fit the holders. Does that make sense?
 
I never made a die and most people wouldn't have the tools for that. You got a set and likely all your dies are same size on outside. Use a ruler and measure one, likely be 1 or 1.25". Or look at die holder in your set it should say the size. Die holder in set for hand chasing threads. The other kind die holder is tapered for a tailstock for starting straight threads.
